Sorry boss, I gotta leave early for a WOW raid.
OR
Sorry guys, I'll be a little late. I have to work.

You would risk your job for a WOW raid?

Depends on how much you value or enjoy your job. Hell, you could be out of work so quit your bitching.

I should add in a 4th option, just leave 10-15 minutes early every sunday and hope my boss doesn't care enough to notice. lol.

gotta figure out what I need to do to log into my desktop remotely from work so I can at least be logged in and through the queue when I get home.

I really hope your boss finds out and fires you.

That's harsh.

Nah... Being harsh would be wishing that NSFW got in a car accident that crushed his legs and put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

I mean, come on... if you're going to play the part of an eThug, do it right! ;)

if I escalate it to his boss, there's the benefit of possibly exposing my boss for the stubborn mule that he is, but I also run the risk of looking like a whiny bitch.
.

That's not a risk, it's a guarantee. Even if you expose your boss for being a mule you also expose yourself as a whiny bitch.

It really depends on how he explains his reason for needing the time off to his boss. He'd look like a moron if he mentioned a WoW raid at all (please tell me that you didn't use that as your excuse when talking to your manager!), but he'd have a strong chance of getting that time off if he said that he had to leave early for Sunday church service or for a weekly Sunday dinner with his family.

Just posting this here you sound whiny. Seriously man it sucks that your schedule has been changed like that but why on earth would you complain to your boss. Do you have the guy around the office that complains to everyone? How does everyone treat him.

If you are going to raise a complaint then you should make sure you have all your ducks in a row (and a better reason than a WoW raid). Make sure that you present the problem with the new schedule as an inconvenience to many instead of just one. Also you must be able to present a relevant solution to the problem that is a win for you, your boss, and your bosses boss.

If you fail to present this situation as a counteractive to productivity or fail to show a viable solution to the problem or if you fail to show that this is an inconvenience to many you are destined to be ignored.

How about work your way up to be a senior high council of you guild and propose a time change to 830pm or 9pm.

if I'm whining, it's not because of WoW... I've been on the verge of quitting and probably would if it wasn't such a cost-effective enjoyment of time.

it's more the principle that he (my boss) isn't willing to bend on something as pointless as 30 minutes, which is something that my old boss always gave me a good amount of leeway on that I never abused.

With that bending of time for you to play WoW.

Seriously, stop whining. Be glad you have a job. Suck it up and do what you have to do. If it means working a shitty schedule you don't like until you find another job that has a schedule that supports your online activities so be it.

I agree with your assessment of WoW being a cost effective enjoyment of time. When I played (I have long since quit) I only went out to the bars about 1 night a week on average. I also ate out a lot less often.

You are holding onto things you liked about your previous boss. If you continue to compare your new boss's actions to your old boss's actions then you will be gravely disappointed, discontent and continue to be upset. However if you just smile, realize that things have changed, and get on with your life you will be a happier person.

Many people would kill for that schedule. Suck it up and tell your WoW buddies they can stick their thumbs in their asses until you get home.

What happened to your WoW playing *EX* boss?

he was promoted and is running a different department now, but not one that I could transfer to (with what they're doing, he can't really justify any more than the 2 guys that were already there)

Can your RL not tolerate you being late to one night every other week without demoting you?

yeah... I think somewhere along the line, I accidentally started seeing this as a career instead of a j-o-b. I need to find my way back to the mentality that this is just a paycheck, I should put in 110% regardless of the shit that's flying around me, and keep trying to figure out wtf I want to do when I grow up.

I don't see why any of this is a big deal. If the OP approaches the higher up in a civil and rather casual manner I don't see it as whining. Just say something like, "I was wondering if I could flex my hours by half an hour. Mr. X isn't sure about at it and wanted me to clear it with you to make sure that wouldn't cause any inconvenience with the night shift." If you don't make it a big deal I don't see why it would be a problem or a blackmark against you to ask. The last job I had was pretty much all flex hours. I could come in on the weekends, do work offsite at library, etc. As long as I was in for the meetings and for a good chunk of the regular workday to be reachable by the office there wasn't a problem. Heck, I spent one afternoon walking around the research park reading all the papers I needed read that day.

I'm just curious, but what is a typical scolding like for being "late" for a raid?

banned from in-game chat for a raid?
forfeit 100gp to each guild member?
cast self-immolation spell on your character?

i've never played WoW, please humour me. describe the cliffnotes of the punishment for being late for the raid so i can die laughing in my cubicle.

That's a 50 DKP minus! If you could find that raid vent clip you'd be laughing I think.

I think the punishment is you don't get to raid, do not acquire new purple shinies, and thus e-peen shrinkage occurs.
