I work in a 24-hour office, so scheduling is always a giant pain in the ass... we're moving to a new 12-hour schedule after this week.

while giving the schedule one last look-over yesterday, I noticed a tiny issue -- every other sunday, the schedule has me working 8 am - 8 pm, which would make me late for a wow raid 😱 (lame excuse, I know)... I asked my boss if I could just come in and leave half an hour early, which wouldn't really impact the schedule in any way as far as coverage goes since I work the morning swing shift (I just have to be in to relieve the overnight guys in the AM) and would allow me to continue riding my bike to work, but my boss was a total fascist about it. wouldn't even consider any argument I made in my case. he said if I had a problem with it, I should take it up with his boss.

now, do I...

-take it up with his boss
-suck it up but stop staying late, coming in early, or volunteering to help cover holidays
-suck it up, be grateful I still have a job, and bend over and take it

if I escalate it to his boss, there's the benefit of possibly exposing my boss for the stubborn mule that he is, but I also run the risk of looking like a whiny bitch.

makes me frustrated... every department that my current boss has ever been in charge of has been riddled with drama and no one's drawing the connection to the common thread in every situation.

I wish I had a better excuse than WoW raiding :laugh: I know how retarded it sounds to people who don't know life outside of single-player console games, but I don't really see how it's different than any other hobby.

I was a 9 to 5'er, but the first thing my new boss did when he came in was decide that everyone's working weekends (except him, natch... and god forbid I mention the fact that he didn't work weekends when he was in my position either).

I've sniffed around for a new job, but haven't seen any data centers that are hiring and there's something to say for staying with a company that survived the .com crash with this economy.

Oh, and "if I escalate it to his boss..." If you did that where I work, you'd be out on your ass. I don't know your corporate culture, but here, that's like spitting in the face of your boss's boss, and telling him he made a shitty choice when he chose your boss.

If you didnt ride your bike to/from work would it be an issue? Maybe just drive to work on sunday?

Do you know how many people would kill to have your problem? Matter of fact, press the issue. Maybe then you will be replaced with someone who appreciates his job more than he does a computer game.

gotta figure out what I need to do to log into my desktop remotely from work so I can at least be logged in and through the queue when I get home.
 
What exactly IS your schedule now? Since it's a 12 hour rotation, I'd imagine that it works something like this:

Day Shift #1: Monday through Wednesday, 8 AM to 8 PM + Every other Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM
Day Shift #2: Thursday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM + Every other Sunday from 8 AM to 8 PM

The night shift is basically the same schedule, except from 8 PM to 8 AM.

My (soon to be former) job had an 12 hour operations shift that worked similar to that, which I had to work when someone in ops was sick or on vacation. The three or four day weekends were nice, but those 12 hour shifts on the weekend were mind numbingly boring. The transition from a 9 to 5 schedule to this really SUCKS for the first few days, too!

Anyway... if it bugs you that much, you should mention it to your bosses boss in a civil (non whiny!) manner. Keep in mind that you didn't have this awful schedule when you started this job, so you should be given some flexibility in terms of working weekends.

keep in mind that anything in this thread is just talk... and I'm not so much that I'm qq'ing about wow as much as it just pisses me off that my boss wouldn't even be willing to compromise on half an hour after I've spent 5 years doing everything they've asked without complaint whenever they've needed me to come in early, stay late, cover other people's shifts, etc.

the conversation I had with my boss about it may have been riding the line a bit (I might have referred to it as "fucking retarded bs") but he knows how I am... I've got a mouth, but when it comes down to it, I do what has to be done. if I really wanted to cross the line, I'd have said something like "wow, now I suddenly understand why half of your old department quit or transferred."
 
You don't have the right to escalate it, he is your boss. The boss's boss isn't really your boss, he is your boss's boss. The type of decision you put to him was your boss's to make and he made it. I know you might not think its boss but your boss thinks its boss that you work weekends, me personally I'd start looking for a new boss (job).

That's not a risk, it's a guarantee. Even if you expose your boss for being a mule you also expose yourself as a whiny bitch.
