How is selling it pointless? (as long as you can get a decent amount of money) The ring serves no real purpose. Yes they already bought it but maybe it means something to her to get rid of the diamond.

I for one will never support the diamond industry.

She was aware of that stuff before the movie, but I think it sparked her interest to do some more research in the area. So I guess yes, but not directly.

This is why Propoganda films work !

Propaganda FTW!

people get exploited everywhere. It is a cold hard fact of life. I just think that if they are going to get rid of something expensive. Since he bought it how about replace it with something expensive both of them can enjoy.

pretty much. it won't do help if she sells it. although get her a regular silver or gold ring instead.

i doubt i'd actually buy a real diamond ring. maybe a synthetic but even then maybe not. i just don't think the diamond industry is ethical. but once the ring has been bought, selling it won't make a difference.

We got married with $40 wedding bands of white gold.

Knew about the diamond industry then...

I have bought her a couple of pieces with diamonds in them... but they're recycled, and it was only because it was the other stone (amber\Peridot) that I was interested in...

Anyway...

I'd be happy to have an activist wife that was concerned with issues, though a little bothered that she'd be willing to destroy a symbol of shared commitment to do so...

meh.. we used disposables 'cause we're lazy though, so maybe you're more hardcore...

It's pointless because it will do nothing to hurt the diamond industry. She already bought it, the damage is done. What would help is not buying any more. Putting it back on the market is pointless.

If she truly had the courage of her convictions she would throw it away so she does not contribute to the diamond trade. Though that would still be pointless, as it would do nothing to hurt them.

If you're going to prptest something, do it in a constructive way. She's just doing this to make herself "feel" better. She needs to grow up and get a grip on reality.

It's not what you change, it's what you do that makes you who you are.

Vegetarians won't change the meat industry, but they don't have to be a part of it.

Yeah, she's got a little silver band that she still plans to use, so it's not like she's asking to go without a ring. She just bothered by the way the diamond industry works and doesn't want to be associated with it.

Um... ok. Would it make a difference to her if it was a Canadian Diamond instead of African?

The amusing part about Canadian diamonds is that they are more expensive than Debeers diamonds. So people say diamonds are overvalued and then want to spend even more to get a Canadian one. 😕

They pluck those Canadian diamonds just a couple hrs north of me 🙂
A few yrs ago nobody knew what the h3ll a kimber pipe was, now we all know!

Me hardcore? No. Her? Yes. She did a lot of research into disposables and how bad they are for the environment, so went with cloth. Maybe I should feel bad that I don't really care, but I don't. I love her to death and I think it's cute how upset she gets over things like that.

As for the sign of commitment, I've got 3 of those little things running around all day calling me 'Daddy'. So the rings really just don't mean that much to me.

That's my wife though, and part of the reason I love her.

Of course, it's also the reason we use cloth-diapers, and I'm not a big of a fan of that. Though it is nice to not have to spend the money on disposables.

Thus the origin of the term "smelly hippies" 😛

Ask her how much you're saving on cloth diapers when the water bill comes.

~$30 a month, especially for newborns. We calculated it out because I had the exact same question.

I'd rather
1. Be able to drop the offensive-smelling package directly into the garbage
2. Not have to wash the fabric containing said offensive-smelling package in the same washer that cleans my work clothing
3. Not have to spend the time performing step #2

IMO, $30 for all three of those is money VERY well spent.

That's rather unfair. It's possible she reevaluated her position on the matter and feels compelled to divest herself of any connection to diamonds.

Though if that's the case, SELLING it and thereby profiting on the continued perception of diamonds as valuable as foisted by the diamond industry is somewhat hypocritical.

That's what I mean. Like Amused said, if her position really has changed, destroy the diamond and sell the band. Don't go buy a TV made with underpaid and overworked labor somewhere else.

Yep, as I said, if she truly had the courage of her convictions she would throw it away so she does not contribute to the diamond trade.

By selling it she just joins the trade herself.

I don't think so. True, she already bought the diamond. But every time she goes out and people see it, she's promoting it. And that is what she doesn't like.

If you didn't want to be associated with someone, wouldn't you sever ties with them? Or would you just say, "well, it's too late now because I already know them, so I might as well keep the connection with them."

By selling it she's asking to profit personally by the diamond trade. She can't do that without being a hypocrite.
Put the ring away as a keepsake.

Her problem is she hates the diamond instead of the trade and abuses. She is taking her protests out on an inanimate object.

Her owning a diamond does nothing to promote the trade. Her SELLING a diamond does.

Good point. To be honest, I don't know what she plans on doing with it. I guess I just assumed selling it because we paid for it. I wouldn't put it past her to grab my hammer at some point in time.

EDIT: I think the only reason she'd want to sell it is because she feels bad that I spent the money and doesn't want me to suffer because of it. I don't personally love the diamond industry, but don't see the 'need' to destroy it, so it's a good middle ground for both of us. But if left to her, I have little doubt she'd destroy it or just put it away somewhere.
