Would the 528i be considered a chick car?

Yeah not necessarily chick car, but car for someone wanting brand/luxury but whom doesn't really care about performance.

Depends, is your self confidence so low that you're actually factoring in what strangers will say about your car choice?

*28i anything is pretty much the laughing stock of real BMW enthusiasts as it represents people who buy the badge and not the car. M or *35i or go home, in my humble opinion.

That's basically the definition of chick car. How much power does it have? What's the mileage? Does it have limited slip? How many gears does the automatic transmission have?
"I don't know. I bought it because it was sparkly and the salesman winked at me "

Not so, I would buy an Aston Martin DB5 in a heartbeat, but it's not fast, I love the brand, I love the style. Not a chick car...

In northern california, chicks who want badge drive Mercedes or Lexus. Hell, my older sis has the ES350 and younger sis has C300. BMWs of all types I typically see guys driving, except the X5, lots of women in those.

From the standard masculine American view that you're not a man unless you've bought the top engine...yes.

To be honest though, the 3/528i cars from BMW drive pretty nicely. The engine is as smooth as butter and returns decent gas mileage. If I had a commute that involved a lot of traffic and long distances...I'd certainly consider one. Don't get me wrong, a nice, powerful engine is great...but not always necessary. You can have plenty of fun with a smaller engine.

I drove a 2007 335i for the first time a few weeks ago. I have to admit that it was fantastic to drive. I want one now, even though I know it wouldn't be as practical for me. I'm starting to think I should buy a car I can enjoy driving fully again before gas powered cars go away. It's a bit small for me. It would be impossible for anyone to sit behind me when I'm driving because I'm tall. I also don't like not having a spare tire. The other thing to consider with the x35 cars is the fuel pump issues.

The 328 makes perfect sense if you are on a tighter budget and want lower cost of entry, better fuel economy, and less risk of fuel pump problems.

The 528, I don't know, I think it would still have reasonable performance. According to this site, you get 0-60 in 6.5 instead of 5.5 seconds. It's not fast, but it's reasonable for a large sedan.

To the original question, I have zero feeling of the 5 series being a chick car. I see a lot of girls driving 328s, but It doesn't really seem like a chick car either, except maybe a 328 convertible.

It's just a BMW 5 series for people who don't need to race and/or compensate for something.

This, while I personally wouldn't purchase a base engine there are plenty of reasons to do so.
