would like some advice re: quitting over a pay increase

I was a computer rep at a local store where I live, with a Computer Systems Technology (2 year) diploma from a technical college. Making poor cash. I had enough, and found myself a job doing tech support, and business analysis/some programming, and tripled my paycheque. I hate that qualified people are underpaid in this industry just because they can be.
If people stay at jobs they don't like, and aren't compensated properly for, the 'system' wins. There is someone out there who is willing, and able, to pay you the amount you deserve, and for you to enjoy your job at the same time. I am in the same boat man... was an intern for 3 years, got hired on full time with ~5% increase over what I was making as an intern (but got benefits). Now ~1.5 years after I was hired, I am still making about the same, with 5000% more responsibility. That is mainly why I am interviewing for other jobs within the company.

I'm praying at my job. I went from x+4% bonus (upto 10%) three years ago, no raise, then 2.5% raise. No bonuses. So I'm actually making less now than three years ago while having solid reviews.
Do you really like your current job? Because if it were me, I probably wouldn't go back to my boss and tell him that I have a better offer unless I really wanted to stay there. IMO, if you do stay there with a pay raise after doing that, it's just going to increase tension between you and your boss, and make them think you aren't loyal. If you are slick diplomat you can avoid this impression with your boss, but it still could influence your reputation with others in the company.
Don't try to make your company "price match" for you.
Here's what you need to do, step by step:
1) Begin job search, don't tell ANYONE about it, except maybe a spouse and close family (who might be able to help in the search)
2) Interview and all that good stuff, wait for an offer that is truly good.
3) a) If you are satisfied with the company you are at, speak to your boss (schedule a formal meeting if you can) and tell him you would like a raise to what the amount the other company is offerring.. DO NOT MENTION that the amount is from another company or job prospect. Make sure you tell him the 5W's and H about why you deserve the raise.
3) b) If you aren't satisfied with the company you are at and think the new job is more prosperous... put in your two weeks notice. Skip to step 5.
4) If you offer is declined, put in your two weeks notice and accept the other company's offer. If your offer is low-balled, decide whether the difference in salary is enough to make you stay and pass up a new opportunity.
5) Enjoy which job you selected.
*Key points: Do NOT mention a different job to ANYONE remotely close to the workplace. Name your price, you'll be disappointed if what you get is not what YOU want and will have to wait another year to bring it up again.

Even if the offer is accepted, it will leave a sore spot on your image within the company. Oftentimes they'll just tell you to enjoy your new job and escort you to the door.

Your only option is to find another job and then go to your boss. If he says "ok bye" because of his pride, then you're not great friends.
Frankly you've allowed yourself to be dicked around for too long. This is business and you've allowed yourself to be taken advantage of. I'd find a new job. In fact I'd be very weary about even staying with your current one if they promise to match, because they'll try and screw you later. Just find a new job.

I agree with you. In the past I haven't had a dire need for money so I haven't pressed the issue. Now money is an issue.
btw.. I do server/desktop support, along with cisco stuff.
I would like to (ideally) work for a fairly small company (less than 400-500 people),
