cash...

to move to a southern american country, buy some land, build a home, and just retire on the leftover cash?

assuming you wouldnt mind leaving behind the technology/ease of life in the states.. basically im asking, is half a million dollars enough to just up and go, buy land, a house, and have enough left over to invest/live off the interest for the rest of your life?

sure, if you don't mind living on the most corrupt and dangerous continent in the world, go right ahead

not sure about south american country,

but if INDIA,

then half mil $ = Rs. 2 crore,

if you can go to some village or small town, you can probably buy house/property for 50 lakhs, invest the rest and live off.

however, you will have to suffer developing country problems: mosquitoes, frequent power cuts, etc.

Unless you can really live minimally for a long time, I'd say no. After leaving all the tech and ease of life, you will continually spend to make up for it.

You'd also probably get killed the moment someone found you have that much in the bank.

There are plenty places you can do it for even less. But you're stuck living in some shithole 3rd world country the rest of your life.

As long as I have a fast internet connection and the ability to have computer part upgrades delivered for somewhere near reasonable market price, I wouldn't mind living in a van down by the river 😛

You could probably buy a decent house in a decent part of a city with that money and still have money left over to live. Don't know if it would be enough for the rest of your life.

You could also live just as you do here, with all your luxuries. But then the cost of living would be no cheaper, it would actually be greater than in the U.S.

You could live in some rural shithole. Your money would last, but you would be miserable.

Lots of old people retire in Mexico and seem to have a decent enough standard of living so maybe it would work.

And that's the crappy part. Imports like electronics are a lot more expensive in Latin America. Or actually, they are more expensive in most countries. In other forums I have read about Poles and Greeks having to pay way more for their computer parts and games. And they have a much lower income than here in the U.S. That must suck.

There is America between the West and East coasts too. 🙂

Think Iowa or Kansas. 50K house + some land for your farm or something. Within ~50 miles of some metropolitan.

I work with some Filipino immigrants who often say that with a half million USD, you could easily live like a king in a nice area of the Philippines.

You know, i've lived in a lot of places and spent time all over the world but the only one place that is home to me is in Sheffield, England.

I'm going to have to do a lot when i get back but fortunantly i have two grown children who have been looking after the place and fixed what needs to be fixed... and i know it's piss poor weather all year around but still... it's home.

I suppose if i didn't have a place like that, i could live anywhere, but i would still not choose any south american countries, those that are not places where you'd get kidnapped are places where you'll get thrown in jail for nothing or being shot for having the wrong accent.

Now... Greece or Kos, that is a place where all women are fat and hairy... so ok, not a good idea... but Italy or Spain is out of the question too for me, you go a long way with a little bit of money in Spain and i do speak Spanish so.. for you that might be a great idea... for me, if it isn't Sheffield it would be Israel.

well your ex prez bushie the W did that, in Argentina, not too far from the nazi compound in SA

is it remotely possible that W has better inside info that you?

I believe in Thomas Jefferson's (one of my heroes) America and dedicate my life here, and HAVE and WILL make a difference if challenged

i believe in TJ's america too. sadly.. we've come a long way from that... in a way i dont like...

i think there needs to be a change..a drastic change.. but that's just me..and i would surely get bashed for what i really think needs to be done.. but than again..that's just me..

Son, the best you'd do is to piss your pants and ramble more about how this is your god given nation and those dirty messicans...

Where are you defending America today? I don't see you here in Afghanistan, are you in Iraq?

I've met Americans in Bali and southern Thailand who are living on just about nothing. As long as you're willing to go at least somewhat native, I think you could live well off and happy for decades on $500K in many, many countries. I'm sure that your perspective of comfort and need will have to change, though.

I could do it.

until u get sick or kidnapped.
think diggnation had a thing on it last week where they looked up what money could buy in X country

If you're 65 and move to a Central American country with $500K, you probably could live there the rest of your life if you would be willing to go without some of the niceties we have in the US. If you're 40, no, it's not enough money to live for 40 more years.

On another board I use, a regular poster in his early 50's had $400K and moved to Costa Rica permanently. He had a beautiful house, all the women he could handle, but as an American with no apparent source of income he stuck out. He was hassled by the police all the time (they wanted ongoing payments to leave him alone). He lasted 2 years before moving back.

Sure it is enough. I knew quite a few servicemen who retired and stayed in the Philippines when Clark Air Force Base was open. Their pension offered them a good life in a tropical country... and it was pretty safe. More attractive that returning to the U.S. and getting some stale government job to supplement your retirement.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/off-topic/2541213-living-in-a-bamboo-hut-in-the-philippines.html

This guy got divorced and lost everything and moved to Philippines with like $1,500 to his name. He's been there for over 7 years now, married and living in oceanfront hut he built for like $2,000. I believe he said the land cost like $20k which he's paying in monthly installments of couple hundred bucks. He said you could rent a room for about $50 a month on the island and live "comfortably" on $500 a month. While his definition of comfort is nowhere near mine, $6k a year is probably 4 times the average income there.

Occasionally I daydream about living on some island and fishing but I know I wouldn't last a month from boredom.

To the OP: yes, you could do it, and you could probably do it for a fuck of a lot less than $500k.

In fact, most SA countries will give you a pretty much indefinite visa if you show that you have $250k in the bank. They want gringos to retire there. You could keep your US citizenship, rent a crashpad in your hometown so you can come "home" whenever you want, but live the sweet life in some SA paradise, swimming in the ocean and fucking garotas.
