Would getting a bunch of Amish people to build your house be worthwhile?

First off, I read the buy/build house thread, and I am NOT trying to make a parody.

I am actually really interested if it would be cost-effective to have a group of Amish people build your house for you, and pay them in whatever they wanted.

I am thinking of having a ranch-type house with maybe a loft or something.

Yea, I can easily get either Amish or Mexicans, and pay them/at least offer some sort of comforts while they're working, but I want to know which group is cheaper.

LOL, exactly what I was going to say.

Actually, a lot of them will, for the right price.

But at least around here, amish are expensive to hire, and they basically do what they please (because they know (think) that everyone trusts the Amish). If you piss them off, then I hope you don't hire them to do anything for you, because the quality of their work won't exactly be stellar.

Not true at all.

Wired did a great article on them a while back. I grew up in an Amish area but never really knew much about them.

When I was in college, I bought a car from a guy who was having his office/shop (he was an auto body guy) built by an Amish construction team. He said it was actually cheaper to go with them. YMMV

they build mobile homes and motor homes

they just have to use air tools instead of electric tools

they are not restricted from putting wires into something, they just can't use the wires or the something the wires are in

More correctly, they can (and many do) use anything (including wires, etc.), as long as it does not connect to a public utility at any point.

My dad sometimes gets amish people to help him with rehabs. He really likes them, says they work really hard, and even get the kids to help.

You should equip them both with various weapons and have an Amish vs Mexicans TV show. The possibilities!

We got our kitchen cabinets from an Amish company. One of the less strict groups of them, though, when we visited the factory they had power tools and the like. Great craftsmenship, though, truly first rate.

Only problem is the little sister and hard use keeps breaking the knobs, but they send us boxes of new ones free whenever we call them.

The issue with most Amish is the fact that it's a public utility - if you are generating your own electricity via generator, or they are generating electricity for you, then they generally do not have any problem using electricity.

Most of them (at least all except the strictest of the old order) also do not have a problem with using a telephone during business hours, as long as it is for work - so I don't see why they would have any problem running wire, etc., for that.

Every county I have constructed a home in required a master electrician certified with the county to request the permit, be on-site during 100% of the wiring, and request the inspection. Same for the plumbing and gas lines.

Just b/c they are Amish, doesn't mean they know wtf they are doing
Is that Amish gonna correctly wire the house?

Knew some work performed by German Baptists (think Amish with cell phones) and I never saw a toilet so poorly installed

My point:
Religion /=/ Construction abilities

True, my parents had some work done by some Amish, and they really messed up the plumbing.
