Would a new GTX 760 be wasted on an older AMD motherboard?

Anybody know how much performance I should expect to get using a new GTX 760 with an older AMD based motherboard? The board is an ASUS M3A78-T which uses the AMD 790GX/SB750 chipset and PCIe 2.0.

AMD 940 quad core CPU and 8GB of DDR2 800 I think. Not sure what else you would want. It doesn't seem AMD allows for separate download of chipset drivers for the board. That concerns me. I only see drivers bundled with video card drivers. The system has Windows 8.1 Pro. The motherboard is about 6 years old.

What is your current GPU? I expect performance will be much better than not having the 760, and if you were to upgrade your chipset and CPU in the future you could get even more FPS.

The catalyst drivers should only install the necessary components, so the graphics drivers will be left out and you can still download the latest Nvidia.

I put a gtx670 in my former system which was a 965 in a gigabytre 790xta mobo and it worked well. Got a nice bump from the previous card, which was a radeon 5830. Then I built my current system, I re-used the gtx670 and put the 5830 back in the old for my son and everybody's happy.

My current GPU is a 5770.

No it won't bottleneck.
The only thing that might be weaker could be your cpu. But, your motherboard with pcie-2 slot is fine. Infact there is no single Gpu that could saturate pcie-2.0 slot. But, In case you want to crossfire with top of the line Gpu, then it might slightly be limited. Otherwise you are fine!

I have a PC Power and Cooling 750W. I also have a new unopened OCZ 850W gold rated, forget which model.

Thanks folks.

I put my friend's 760 in my system, after uninstalling the AMD drivers and cleaning the registry. Games seem a bit better, but the system is acting odd, and my USB ports are no longer working correctly. I suspect the AMD chipset drivers are unhappy. I can't find them anywhere. It doesn't help that I run 8.1, but the download site at ASUS doesn't even have chipset drivers for 7. I may just get all new stuff and put my current setup in another case. Of course this could also be due to the age of my system. I tried to do a Windows refresh but couldn't. Like many others who went from 8 to 8.1 my system won't refresh, it gets an error. MS says to put an 8.1 USB stick in and it should be able to reset, but my system isn't seeing the USB drive. Oh well, maybe I'll make an 8.1 DVD.
