would a mid 1990s mustang cobra SVT be a good car for a teen?

Surely you jest.....you're kidding, right?

More appropriate would be a late-80s 4-cylinder Mustang.

I wouldn't buy one, but that's just cause I'm not crazy about those particular cars. Generally I would agree with the HELL NO statements in this thread, despite being a teen myself - because I know that most teens ARE irresponsible pieces of crap wreckless drivers. That doesn't hold true for everyone, though. So if you really are responsbile and can (would) drive safely, then just go for the car you want and enjoy it. But most people DO fark up their first cars, so it isn't really an awesome idea. You WILL get laid, though. :p

what qualifies as "old"...?

and insurance overs the car, so if something happens to it, it's paid for whether it's a beater or not..

Yes, but insurance rises quite a bit if it's a nice car. They have to charge more because they have more to lose if it's a nice car. I'm talking like early to mid-90s. They usually have lower mileage, are cheap to maintain, and are easy to find. Semi-luxury ones are very easy to find. Go look for a crown victoria or a lincoln towncar. My first car was an older crown vic, probably the best thing I could have been stuck with. It was actually convienent to have the room so everybody was comfortable. We ended up taking my car alot because of that. The engine was solid, the transmission was also, though not the most sporty thing but in that car what do you expect? I highly reccomend that, or one of the volvos. Honestly, do NOT get your first car as something really sporty. You'll get get pulled over more often, much more likely to not get off without a ticket, and you'll pay through the nose for insurance.

no offense, but i dont want a boat. ;) i atleast want something with a stick that will be a fun car to drive. like a early 90s bimmer maybe? or a g20t? maybe an integra? what will have cheap repairs?

Be prepared to pay for it one way or another (safety and money), and remember foriegn cars are more expensive to repair...

Teens with sports cars will take it in the arse from any insurance company. Get a less-expensive non-sports-car and use the $1000-$1500/year you save on insurance to take your girlfriend on a cruise or something.

If a girl will fvck you because of your car and for nothing else, do you really want to be sleeping with her? You'll just get played and your sorry ass will be dumped the moment a new shiny boytoy looks her way.

Oh, the niavete of high school. Such materialistic worries....

So in my opinion, HELL NO. Teens should be forced to drive beater cars until they can learn the rules of the road.

I agree, I only shudder at the things I used to do when I first got my car heh.

Were you really being sarcastic? Or are you trying to tell yourself that you are being sarcastic when it fact, it is a significant motive? I've known more than a handful of people who honestly did consider it a main factor when purchasing a car. For example, he was debating between a WRX and an older RX7...the WRX is faster stock, more reliable, but does't have the pussy power. He went with the 7.

There are people out there that do honestly beleive the more they flaunt, the more inmature, materialistic girls will flock to them. They're usually the easiest to bang, anyways.

I managed to escape death many times thanks to the fact that my first car was UNDERPOWERED. If the car had had any balls, I'd surely be dead.

That, and the insurance will make you hate the car six months into it when you have to make your first renewal payment

Yes, i was by all means being sarcastic. I get my share of women without my own car. Having a nice car wont do much. ;)

how long have you been driving stick by the way? you will have trouble getting it going form stop on a steep hill unless you have a TON of practice (and no those 20 some hrs you need for drivers ed is not enough).

how old are you by the way

NO! He will kill himself most likely.

+/- the friends in his car or other vehicles. Buy the kid a safe, reliable sedan . . . the insurance will be cheaper and more importantly the kid will live long enough to decide for himself that 300hp as a teen would have been a bad idea.

Would you drive that car like a granny drives her oldsmobile? If you said no, then it's prolly safe to say it's not a good idea safety wise. If you said yes, then you don't really need all that power now do you? Either way, my suggestion is to get something else. Someone here suggested a mustang. That's a good idea. It's got power, but if you get into an accident, it's definitely a hefty car.

I'd love one if I could afford one, I'd probably crash it...eh :)

Anyhow, you say you're a safe driver, don't speed excessively, etc. If that is so, wtf do you want a Cobra for? Get a 6 cylinder stang if you're set on em, and the speed is still there if you want it. I can drive wrecklessly in my moms farkin honda minivan, I dont need 300 HP on tap to drive wrecklessly :D

I'd either suggest getting a car that wont rape you as bad on insurance, doesn't have the same power but is still fun to drive and handles nicely. A early 90's 3 series would work :). I'm getting a '89 325i in the next couple weeks, I'm pretty psyched.

Ok, IMO there is no good car for a teen. What it comes down to is how good is the driver. If you suck in a Cobra, you are gonna suck in an Olds 88. The problem is temptation. If you can resist that, then you are OK. Not like buying a bike that can give an F1 car a run for it's money. Self examination time.

Yeah, get something cheap. I'm not insulting you or anything, but you will at the very least ding it up some. Get something where it won't matter, and stash away the rest of the money for something else, like insurance.

Hmm . . . wrong forum. Happy HIPAA my arse. I think you are on the right track with an integra. Reliable and reasonable to maintain/repair. Bimmers are somewhat reliable but expensive to maintain/repair.

Go buy Consumer Reports or Consumer Digest's car issues. I wouldn't pick a used vehicle until you REALLY know what ownership means.

I'm biased towards Integras. VTECs are reliable and safe. The kicker is that they can go like scoot but it requires more intent than the blip of a throttle that will launch a Cobra. I hated externally imposed discipline when I was a teenager . . . thank God for externally imposed discipline when I was a teenager.

i dont think itd be a bad idea. im 15 and im practicing driving my in brother's S2000 that im going to inherit as soon as i get my license. i doubt id drive it fast, id drive it normally. like with any other car. i guess it depends on the person. you just have to be responsible. and the S2000 is quite a fast car for a first time car too.

so i guess you have to decide whether or not you have the responsibility to drive it safely.

16yo with a Cobra!? Jeez...

You couldn't have had your license for long..nearly a year at most? What do you drive now?

Also..might I ask how you can afford it? I'm 19 & I don't have any difficulty with my car ('98 Corolla)..but it'll get 40mpg highway..and insurance isn't too bad (~$1400/year).

I drove a friend's Mustang GT 5sp -- if you think you can handle a manual tranny really well, compare what you're driving...I went from a 120hp Corolla to a 200+ hp car that actually had power. The clutch was much stiffer, as was the gas pedal...I could drive w/o stalling or chirping the tires, but it was definitely different...and it had a bit of power. A Cobra would be even faster..
