would a mid 1990s mustang cobra SVT be a good car for a teen?

yeah, the insurance would be rather large. but if i get the money, should i consider it? it's damn nice. it's either that, or something like a used impreza (2000+), or an accord or something.. maybe a maxima if im lucky.. what ya'll thinking?

I don't think drivers should be trusted with any sort of respectably fast car until they have been driving for at least a couple years. It takes time to learn discipline, driving skills, and self control...and God knows that even then, there are those who still drive recklessly.

So in my opinion, HELL NO. Teens should be forced to drive beater cars until they can learn the rules of the road.

agree 100%

my sister is probably getting a car when she graduates, i know shes going to ask me for advice, and i'm going to tell her to get something for $5K until she learns how to drive (she can hardly handle a shopping cart).

Get something cheap so if something happens to it you can just walk away from it without thinking about the cost. Old luxury cars can usually be had fairly cheap, insurance isn't that much, and you'll be safe if you wreck it. Perfect first car.

i know everyone says that, but honestly, this teen can drive pretty well. he doesnt speed excessively, and is a careful and courteous driver. and besides, "he" knows how to drive standard.. give him some respect.

;)

what qualifies as "old"...?

and insurance overs the car, so if something happens to it, it's paid for whether it's a beater or not..

LOL. You sound like that tool in the other thread who thought he was a good driver and wanted mom and dad to buy him a $30K car.

Having 305hp on tap (285 for 93-95) + teenage = your ass will die, or your ass will get a ticket for speeding, or your ass will get your car impounded and auctioned off for racing. I don't care what you say about how you dont speed or you're a careful driver. You wouldn't be purchasing a Mustang Cobra if you didn't intend on speeding or racing or doing something with it. For a relatively new driver you're going to get yourself killed or someone else killed.

Devil's Advocate: Hell yeah it's a great car for a teen (from the teen's point of view)! It's a blast to drive, sounds great, and could potentially help you get laid. That's what it's all about, isn't it?

i can drive stick perfectly. and this would be paid for solely by myself. gas, insurance, car payments, repairs, everything. ME. i will pay for it all with my own money.

It's an excellent car if you have multi-million dollar life insurrance on the kid.

Maybe get an old 5.0L mustang instead. You still get plenty of power (plus add-ons are fairly cheap) and cheaper insurance.

Yes, but insurance rises quite a bit if it's a nice car. They have to charge more because they have more to lose if it's a nice car. I'm talking like early to mid-90s. They usually have lower mileage, are cheap to maintain, and are easy to find. Semi-luxury ones are very easy to find. Go look for a crown victoria or a lincoln towncar. My first car was an older crown vic, probably the best thing I could have been stuck with. It was actually convienent to have the room so everybody was comfortable. We ended up taking my car alot because of that. The engine was solid, the transmission was also, though not the most sporty thing but in that car what do you expect? I highly reccomend that, or one of the volvos. Honestly, do NOT get your first car as something really sporty. You'll get get pulled over more often, much more likely to not get off without a ticket, and you'll pay through the nose for insurance.

No, you should convince your dad to rent a Dodge Viper for you. That way, he could tell you that he hit 160 driving driving home from the rental place, and bet you $50 that you can't take a picture of himself driving faster!

Then, when you Dad is finished burying you or bailing you out of prison, he can spend the money he just saved on a new Buick or something :)

Why does everyone assume that a new driver will crash a fast car? Just because they aren't the most experienced driver yet doesn't mean they will crash just because the car is fast.
