I ended up deciding there was something wrong with the first 6 pack of Grolsch. The 6 pack I drank last night was pretty different. It was very sweet...

When I went to restock at the class 6 store the other day, the air conditioning was out, and it was ~90 degrees in the store.
Skunked. Told 'ya. ;)
 I don't remember that.

Post 11. Today:

Grolsch isn't skunky from the brewery. That's the fault of someone, somewhere along your supply chain. Beers get skunked when they are allowed to get too warm and then are cooled again.

Wait. You've been drinking all day, haven't you? :p

The "skunked" beer was purchased several weeks ago before it got hot. But I bought 2 six packs at the same time. One was bad, one was ok.

And no, my drinking starts now, with some Purple Haze.

It generally happens at some point along the supply chain but before it hits your store.

Right, I understand the concept, but it seems strange that 2 six packs bought at the same time would have received different treatment.

Could have come to the store in successive shipments, or come to the store in one shipment from the distributor but come to the distributor in different shipments.

Think!

Why is it that it's always imported beer that is skunked, and not domestic beer?

Waiting on the docks before the long sea journey, waiting at the docks after the long sea journey, at some point during the long sea journey . . . not to mention all the different truck rides.

Domestic microbrews have only a regional distribution. But the imports don't have the huge and constant flow of our mainstream domestics, yet aspire to nearly as wide distribution. There are simply too many waypoints where something can go wrong.

Even the big domestics have breweries scattered in different American regions. But think of the complicated journey a German beer brewed in Dortmund takes to finally get to East Moosefart, Montana.

Good point. It's a miracle that 90% of it ends up here OK. It seems like they'd be better off going with cans or dark colored bottles...

Only about half of those bears are good. You have pretty pedestrian taste in beer. Heineken, Becks, Shocktop, and Ziegen Bock? There are better beers at those price points in similar styles. The only saving grace is that somehow discovered Belgian Ales.

I live more than an hour away from the nearest Starbucks, Chili's, Chick-fil-a, etc. I'm lucky to get what I do.

Shock top is a belgian style ale, btw. :hmm:

EDIT: Please name the better beers at those price points. Those are all around $9 per six pack here.

Yeah, and it's a shitty one.

I don't know what you'll have access to, living in such a remote area with really expensive alcohol. Do you even have an honest to god liquor store with a decent beer selection?

Given that you live in the boonies, Perk's idea that your Grolsch have been getting skunked might be the issue. Grolsch is the comparably priced Dutch Lager that is better than Heineken I would normally say.

Does your local place have Hoegaarden? It's much better than Shock Top.

Well I'm stationed here with the Army, so the class 6 will order whatever I ask for. They didn't have Maredsous before I got here and now they stock it. I can order anything from single bottles to kegs into regular stock.

Stay away from European Light Lagers (Heineken, Grolsch, Stella), because they generally suck. If you like Lagers, start exploring German and Czech style Pilsners. Paulaner makes a spectacular pilsner, though it's usually a bit more expensive than Heineken and the like. Warsteiner and Bitburger are good, too. Beer advocate has a good entry: http://beeradvocate.com/articles/216

For shocktop alternatives, there are a lot of Whitbiers. Try Hoegaarden & Sam Adams White Ale. Here is a BA list: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/48

Also, look into Hefeweisens, which is another type of wheat beer that originated in southern Germany. One of the more available brands from Munich is Franziskaner, which should be in the Heineken price range: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/142/1946. Paulaner also makes a good Hefe, but it's usually more expensive. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/89

You should push to get transferred to Germany :p

Hoegaarden. Wheat beer is nasty. Pretty much any beer made by their parent InBev is crap. Yes, I'm Canadian and I just said Keiths and Labatt are crap.

I've tried everything you've mentioned, in wide varieties. I've tried most of them in it's country of origin. I think stating your opinion as fact initially tastes of jackassery and leaves a sour aftertaste. Everyone else in here has been offering opinions. You come in saying my tastes are pedestrian and that several of the most popular import beers "generally suck." That may be fun for you, but trying to make other people feel bad when we were just having a fun discussion isn't fun for everyone else. Thanks.

I like Hoegaarden. Sam Adams Blackbeery "Witbier" is pretty good in my opinion too. I drank a 6 pack of Purple Haze last night that was delicious. A little light on the alcohol for me though.

You posted pics to demonstrate your good taste in beer and most of the beers were on the low end of quality in their respective styles. Sorry, but anyone who stocks up on Heineken and Stella is more a poseur than an aficionado.

I posted pics to demonstrate that I don't drink American Old Style. The guy who said that (Outhouse) quickly joined in the friendly discussion along with everyone else.

Yeah, drinking the most popular imports makes you a poser. They're not popular because they're good. Nope, bland, poser crap.

I never claimed to be an aficionado. But I think in this little exchange, you're the one coming across as a poser. ;) You must be a blast at parties and bars.

If you think those are actually premium beers, then the joke is on you. Did you buy Becks in Germany?

I did. I also bought Stella in Europe. My European friends tried to explain to me it was like the Coors Light of Europe, but I liked it, and that's all that matters.

nope never drank becks in germany. in my area bitburger was the king of beers and i did not care for it. its pretty harsh for my taste. i mainly stuck with local beer. local meaning local to the the area of Hunsruck. Altbier's were my favorite.
