Some of the open cockpit accidents on youtube are worse. Those guys run the risk of being turned to mist and chunks of meat in front of everybody.

TRIPLE TIME WARP

record?

When they use them to provide safety on highways, you'd have to go through half a dozen or more barrels before you got to whatever barrier they're protecting you from. That's at highway speeds. 1 barrel?!

I don't have any doubt that the worst motorsport accident ever was the 1955 Le Man accident in which 80 people were killed, some spectators decapitated by the car's bonnet. Absolutely horrific.

Wow. Tracks are a heck of a lot safer for spectators these days. I wonder how many of the safety features were influenced by that wreck. 🙁 Sadly, today, several spectators at the motocross races I was at ignored the rules & passed beyond the limits for spectators. A lady standing close to the track was hit by a rock that a bike flipped backwards. They ended up having to get a helicopter in there to fly her for emergency treatment. Not good. Bad day for some racers too - 2 helicopters, 2 ambulances, and at least one parent self-transported their kid for what was probably just a broken arm. Good day for my son though - a few 1st place finishes.

I see they gave him the posthumous win but what happened to the guy who ran him off the road? Every query with the drivers name turns up spanish articles which I can't read. 🙁

He wasn't disciplined. And he didn't run him off the road.

God. Seeing that hood, or whatever it is, flying towards the crowd at that speed, is just chilling. Looks like a rock skipping across the water.

I can't rememeber the race, but there is one from europe in the 70's i think where a flagman gets run over by a formula car and is cut in half at the torso.

Shouldn't they have tires or some other kind of barrier and not water barrels around concrete?

Water barrels are a good barrier, but it doesn't look like they had very many of them.

They had a black tarp over his body....he was dead on impact. If he wasn't, then all that was left after his bones got pulverized including spine and neck, was a pile of meat with two sets of teeth chattering from reflex. I wish I could of been the doctor that went, "Oh yeah....he's one dead muchachos".

the other angle showed he went in sideways passenger side first. That's a real rough impact but that doesnt' mean his body was basically disintegrated.

There are 3 impacts in every car wreck. The car hitting the obstacle, the passenger's body hitting the inside of the car (or the restraints), and the internal organs hitting the inside of the body. Crash engineers have been able to do a lot to mitigate the first 2 impacts, but with a high-g crash like that, nothing will save you from the last one. He probably wasn't 'disintegrated,' but his innards were likely jello pudding.

Honestly, those are probably the arteries from his legs that are stringy there. Arteries are surrounded by tons of collagen and are stretchy. That is an amazingly disturbing picture. The guy's lucky to be alive. Incredible.
