I have heaps of time to burn so I bought WOW.

Is it just me, or is it boring as shit?

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm only on about level 12, but i'm already sick to death of quests where you have to kill the same thing 50 times in order to collect what they drop!

Does it get better at some point?

The whole game is just targeting something, then pressing numbers to cast spells.

woo..hoo...

That's pretty much any game =P

It's more of the same until 70 (with a few dungeons tossed in) then it turns into a gear grind instead of a level grind.

If you enjoy pvp you can gear up quite nicely that way(and burn a lot of time).

The best part is sleeping twelve whole hours the entire week in order to powerlevel when a new server opens.

It's just a staple of the MMO genre. It's what makes it completely addicting to some (or many :p) and a bit tedious for others. (Yes, I think it's boring, but I still played for 3 months)

Well, whether it appears tedious to Brad doesn't necessarily mean it would stay tedious to him. First off, he's level 12, second, it doesn't sound like he has anyone in particular he is playing with. I can't really say, hey he's definitely seen it all. And while gameplay is similar throughout the levels, level 12 is nothing like level 70. Nor is level 12 content anything like level 70 content.

I think my first question is what were you really expecting. To not have to target things, to not have to press numbers? To be able to shoot at things with a mouse like an FPS? Having to type commands like a MUD?

Wat.

Are you taking the piss?

I've been playin solo, so that might be part of the problem.

I don't have a problem with targeting or pressing buttons, I meant that it's ALL there is.

Target, Press Spell A, Press Spell B, wait for creature to die. Repeat 10,000 times!

Once you've targeted something you can pretty much go and get a drink while the computer fights em for ya. Now that's what I call entertainment.

I used to play Diablo 1 and 2 for 12hrs straight. I though WOW would be even more addivtive. It aint.

Diablo 1 and 2 had you simply click on the mob repeatedly until it died. Not much of an improvement. At least in WoW, the visuals are better and the idiots in the chat channels can occasionally be entertaining instead of annoying. Usually they are just annoying and its better to leave all the channels.

But, if you don't like the game, they cancel your sub and don't play it. Don't worry though, Blizzard will still count your subscription next month when they claim to have 11 million players.

Taking the piss? Huh?

And I don't see how you can bring up Diablo 1 and 2 and then complain about pressing spell buttons in WoW. Do you realize how awesome that is.

It's pretty boring at level 12. As you level up you get more spells and skills and your class and playstyle become more customizable. Leveling itself is still tedious if it's all you do, but if you intermingle it with PvP and grouping for instances, that's where it's at. It's a whole new game at 70 though, you need to spend months gearing up before you stop being assraped in PvP by people with ridiculous gear. And if you level another character to 70, it's repeat time. That's the nasty part, imo. The most fun I have in WoW is from about level 40-69 on my alts, doing battlegrounds and instances.

EQ II, LOTRO

and say yes to gumby-like shiny claymation?

LotRO looks nice, but without much in the way of PvP they really limited its target demographic. Unfortunately it doesn't interest me because of that.

EQ2 is made by Sony / SOE, aka. Satan. If their shoddy consumer electronics, music CD rootkits, SecuROM and other blatant customer buttf*cking aren't enough to make you steer clear of them, I don't know what is. The fool and his money soon parted ways.

Err, SOE actually used real people with motion capture to create the very life like combat animations in EQ2. Watching a monk fight is a thing of beauty.

VG's animations were less than stellar, but the visuals were very good. There may have been large expanses with nothing, but you can't just the entire game on that. You need to look at the best they can do as well, and that means the dungeons, the cities, etc.

I took a bunch of Lotro screenshots from playing it through 1-30 and compared them to my WoW screenshots by the end. I liked the way WoW looked when I reviewed. While Lotro has a nice look to it, the variety is pretty damn poor.

I think my pictures should all be on my site, but I can't get to them:

should be... http://picasaweb.google.com/skacer/worldofwarcraft and lotro ... I think. both in my public galleries.

And WoW still managed better animations? Wheres the video that compares all the WoW dances to real life dancers frame by frame.

404 on the lotro one, if you can link it that'd be nice, I'd like to get a good look at it.

I was talking more about gameplay than graphics, imo the former is more important than the latter, though a good game will have both. But as far as graphics go, I have to say I'm impressed with what Blizzard has achieved for such limited resource usage. The devs themselves have said they were disappointed with the limitations presented them, but Blizzard games traditionally will run on stone-age hardware and WoW had to fit the status quo.

I think I did the trial 3 times before I actually got into it. I found it boring and repetitive as well. Once I got on a server where my friends played, it was much more fun. I still solo 50% of the time but it's much more fun being in a good guild and grouping with people.

I've been playing since about September and I really like it. There are definitely boring moments, traveling is painful (much more than it needs to be) and some drop rates are rediculous but it does get to be addictive.

At level 12 you haven't really seen much, it may also be the character you created. There are a lot of different classes to try so you may just need to find the one that matches your style of play.

a agree here, the game really opens up around lvl 20

how long have you played? lvl 12 takes like an hour, and depending on your class you have 2 or 3 spells/skills

if you dont like it you dont like it, its not for everyone but IMO you shoudl give it a lil more time

Its you.

Why? Because most every damn CRPG was the same way... replace kill x with deliver y or what not.

Plus your exaggeration says "troll" all over it... so its you.

The land of dead face humanoid NPCs... who walk around as if they have a load in their shorts? That game is down right dreaful. Horrible combat animations - can you say blocks that are not even animated properly?

WOW > EQ2 > TR > EQ > SW > MO > .... not even sure how far down the list LOTRO belongs.

After 4 70s, a 67, 62 and 60, a Warlord and a Lt. General, Duelistx2 and Rivalx2, 300,000 farmed honor @ 70 and about 25000 arena points, I can say yes it's boring, and wish I had done something else at this point. Maybe I should have done PvE instead? lolol

Must turn off account.

The beginning is nice because it treats you to the quick crack... gives you the levels quickly, all those relatively easy quests. I found it fun because I was exploring all these new expansive areas and playing my ninja-like rogue :p. Even though I had played in beta and lost my character, I still enjoyed playing that section over again.

I think the most fun part in WoW is doing stuff that's a challenge to do. Leveling can get kind of boring the bajillionth time you've done it, but the first time can be rather fun as everything's new.
