World in Conflict Beta Event Begins!

yeah I have been playing since I said I got it working.
Ran through the tutorial and jumped onto a server and been playing nonstop since.

Its pretty cool, I like how its like large scale battle but you don't have to micromanage the entire side, just your little squad.

Runs great too, I wasn't expecting that - first recent release than I can actually play at 1280x1024 (instead of always 1024x768) and it still runs/looks great.

I dled it from fileplanet last night and was getting 600kbs. I played int he closed beta a few weeks ago and this game is really fun online. I only played one game last night buy I saw quite a few improvments already. Its good to play a beta where they actually make changes for the better for the game.

rts with some fps characteristics. You pick a role or in fps terms a class. Then you try to perform that role as best as possible.

Roles are

Infantry
Armor
Air
Support

I play infantry and some support.

I didn't even know what I was getting but I got exited with you saying "gogogogog!" lol. Well I hate missing these things so better safe than sorry.

I got a key. I looked at the website to check out the game. It looks really neat. And gorgeous graphics and setting.

Downloading at 22 k though. 10 k on torrent.

I downloaded and installed it. I see the only option is Multiplayer- is there a skirmish you can play against the computer. I'm not ready for a human opponent.

you must disable SLI for it to work. 8800 GTX SLI is broken. there are many threads on the beta forums. if you have 8800 GTX SLI, disable SLI and stop pulling your hair out.

hehe. Still can't get it to install on one of my machines, but it works fine on my 7900 SLI

Ok, got it installed on my other comp. Real pain in the ass error where I had to delete a log file in my sys32/catroot2 directory.

Now to just learn how to play in an online match.

Found it on Newsgroups, but never dl'ed anything from a newsgroup, how does it work? All I see is a box to check that doesn't do anything.

its a beta. you don't need newsgroups to download a completely legal file, when there are web downloads and even a torrent available.

you just gotta get a key. the file won't let you play unless you have a key, so even downloading from a newsgroup won't do a thing.

There one huge advantage over newsgroup downloads over web downloads. Newsgroup downloads never slow down no matter how many people are getting the same files. This advantage alone is worth it because your bound to get your maximum speed 24/7 on newsgroups no matter how many people are downloading it.

thus why I threw in torrents, since they stay fast when there are a lot of people who are sharing, which is almost always guaranteed when its a file that is of such strong popularity as the WiC beta file is, also since its an official beta.

PLlayed for a few hours lastnight, can be fun or extremely frustrating depending on how good/bad your teammates are. I guess just like every other game.

Performance leaves a lot to be desired, I just left it at the defaults for everything and still chugs massively at times, trying to run it at native rez, 1680x1050 is a no go.

But the game seems pretty stable and relatively balanced, though non stop arty covering all the capture points gets annoying, esp when your air teammates are too dumb to go after them.

I'll probably play some more tonight as Insurgency just pisses me off too much.
