the birth of my first son has made my work schedule change.

since he is up early as hell and usually around 5:30 or so, i decided that i was going to just get up and go to work when he wakes me up in the morning. and after 7 days of this schedule so far (went back last monday for the first time after he was born) it owns.

i now get in by 7am (usually between 6:45 - 7), and i am outta here by 2:30 - 3pm every day. i miss traffic both ways (didn't hit much before, but there were a couple bottle necks i now don't hit at all, and some days with random traffic that i no longer get), and i get home after going to the gym by like 4:30pm now. i used to get home around 7 - 7:30.

i've been grilling a lot more the past 10 days just because i have plenty of light after i get home and shower and am ready to eat dinner. it is odd though as far as the feeling goes so far. it feels so late now at work when it's only noon or so.

it is pretty awesome though. glad my hours are flexible. i am thinking that once my child is out of this schedule i will still probably try to do this same schedule. i used to be up till 1am every day, but not anymore and i'm going to bed around 11pm now. i was up till 11:30 last night finishing up an app, and it was rough this morning, but every now and then i can do it and be fine.

I used to love getting to work that early because no one would be in the office to distract me from getting some actual work done.

had a couple coworkers do that at my old job and was always a little envious of them.

the most flexibility I was able to get in my current job was getting my boss to let me work 8:30 am - 4:30 pm instead of 9-5 (the way the train schedule lines up, there's no real way to get into the office on the hour, so I gave him the options of 8:30 or 9:30, rather than have me get into the office at 8:20 and spend 40 minutes dicking around until starting work at 9)

Nice thing is you get a full 3/4 day with the family and the todo list can be handled without rushing

I also loved to work the swing shift for the same benefits

It's great until you have mandatory meetings at 4:00PM. Bleh. Then you have a 10+ hour day.

congrats on your boy. My wife commutes 3 hours roundtrip everyday but since the kids were born, she moved her hours up. Instead of getting home at 630p on a crowded train, she's home by 515p everyday. She sacrifices some sleep but it's worth it to keep a family life.

I can't get up that early :( I remember working 6-3 and having to take naps all the time when I got home. I think my internal clock is permanently set to get up around 7 and go to bed around 11.

When I took my new job I was told most guys are in by 7 and out by 3, and if I wanted to follow that schedule, I could. It took some adjustments at first (ie, getting up at 530) but I love it. Just as you said, having so much light left in the day after work is awesome.

7-2:30/3 is a pretty sweet schedule. I do a 7:30-4 which is pretty normal with a 1/2 hour lunch.

Mandatory meetings are only for people who are there. If your work schedule has you leaving at 2:30-3, then you aren't expected to hang around until 4. That's ridiculous.

I wake up 5:40am every day to get to work by 6:45 or so. Don't see why this is an issue. Generally work 8.5-9hrs a day.

if 11 people can only make it at 4 and you're the odd man out because you got there at 6a, you probably should stick around until 4.

When you have no choice, it's MUCH MUCH easier.

And this is why a "reduced work schedule" can become a trap. At many companies it has just turned into a way to get employees to work more hours for free.

I've been working an early shift since about 1998. Started when we were allowed to choose our scheduled and I selected 6:30 - 3:30. Did that for about 13 years and then had the 7:00 - 3:30 shift which wasn't bad. Now I work from home 4 days a week which is AWESOME!

This thread makes me glad I don't, and never will have, kids. Money > *
no kids here and I still wouldn't mind that schedule :(

commuting into NYC at 6:30 am, I'd probably just drive and make the trip from door to door in like 30 minutes instead of the 1:30 it takes me via mass transit.

1:30 for mass transit on way is just brutal. Even if you take a train it feels like you are giving up so much of your life to commuting. That's time spent where you could have been working out, enjoying a hobby, or hanging out with friends.

the plus side is that it was a huge, huge raise (and of that hour and a half, an hour of it is just me sitting in a comfortable train seat watching last night's tv shows on my tablet; the rest is a 15-minute drive from my house to the train station, and a 15-minute walk from the train station in NY to my office)

definitely a huge time drain, but not a whole lot I can do about it while stuck in a lease... at least leaving work at 4:30, I get into Penn Station before rush hour really gets underway; it's crowded, but nothing compared to the clusterfuck that I experienced the one time I worked late and had to catch a 5:45 pm train.

I get out at 4:15 every day. Not as awesome as the OP's schedule, but it's still pretty awesome compared to 5pm+
