I do agree with you but its hard to keep morale up when you are overworked and underpaid. First one in and last one out, and smallest paycheck to boot. Not a good feeling.

Perhaps you could use this as a bargaining chip. Instead of asking your current boss for a raise, how about additional benefits:

1. How about a 30 hour work week with same level of pay instead of 40
2. More vacation
3. 4 day work week with 3 day weekend
4. Work from home
5. Additional vacation
6. Gym, Health Club, or Country Club membership
7. A secretary who makes Sammiches on request

A lot of people I have spoken to have advised the same. I'm going to talk to my boss tomorrow and be honest with him. I'm going to tell him I was offered a higher paying position (which happened today) but I want to stay with the firm. I'm going to let his response make my decision.

So what do you think is going to happen in the meeting?

one boss asked me if I would even consider staying at this point, I said I'm open to hearing what he has to say. I'm not sure what will happen in the meeting. I'm looking for some indication that they are willing to further invest in me. He also said if I decide to go, he wishes the best and will not have any hard feelings but he (correctly) said that the only thing I owe him is to give him an hour to make his pitch.

talked to bosses for about an hour today. They gave me a bit more money (not nearly as much as the new position), changed the work structure so that I don't have to work with or report to anyone; I ended up staying.

Bosses made it clear that they would do anything they could to keep me but ultimately wouldn't stay in my way if I choose to move one, now or in the future.

Nice. In essence, they made you a senior associate. Not a bad compromise, especially if you like the folks you work with.
