I would consider trying to get them more money IF they got a written offer from them. 3. if you threaten to quit you need to be ready for me to call your bluff.

Neither persued the opportunity. Money is a key factor in any job but as someone making 30% less than I was less then 4 years ago I would not go back to the higher pay AND job. You need to look at everything and realize that life is not fair. until you are ready to quit you have no leverage

I am ready to quit if need be. My job used to be lax and $10 was fine because I really didn't do much except wait for phones to ring. However, now I'm seriously doing EVERYTHING. If you ask for tech. dept. it's ME. If you ask for billing it's ME. If you ask for sales it's ME. In addition to service calls, network maintence, AND programming. I'm getting stiffed. I'm a hard worker too.

That's valuable advice though. Thanks.

You think it's fair that a guy I'm training to do everything I do makes more money then me and has been there less then a month? Yeah, that's fair.
Hell, if that's the case, considering it is NJ and the workload you do, $15 sounds fair. Also, as someone else posted, I would try to get the extra $$ out of the travel. They'll bill out 44.5c per mile and give you 32 or w/e you asked for...they make 13c per mile off of you.

I don't think anyone is disbuting the fact that you are getting shafted, but that's no reason to be unprofessional about it. Doing so over e-mail (i.e. written record) is even worse, you never know when these things will come back to bite you...

Uh, no.

You just pwned yourself, because the company can deduct 44.5 cents/mile.
He never said "per mile", he just said $0.35.

Double-pwned!

$15 an hour doesn't sound like much for what you do. I pay $15 to guys that can't do more than push a broom or dig a hole. In my biz just speaking english will get you $16.

Fsck them and all the assholes here giving you a hard time. Just walk, no notice or anything. Sometimes it's best to counter fsck the fsckers!

There were less direct ways to bring it up. It's a crapshoot now, basically. If you're as valuable as you say you are, they'll give you the raise, but immediately start looking for someone to replace you, maybe even at a lower rate.

Otherwise you'll be told to fsck off, and they'll start looking for someone else anyway.

I know man. I also live in NJ, one of the priciest places in the country to live. I have zero cash. I survive off of $50/week food money ALL of the rest goes to rent, insurance, and gas. I'm sick of this crap because I'm his best worker. He knows it, the office manager knows it... They can't fire me. However, if I don't get this raise he's getting 2 weeks notice.

If he counter-offers $11 I'm going to say $13... If he counters $12. I'm going to say $13. If I don't get this raise by next Friday I give my 2 weeks. I don't care if I have another job lined up or not.

Oh and I recently lost my cellphone. I just took the work one and told him I'm going to be making personal calls on it. He said... "Hmmm... Ok. Just not too many."

I'm going to agree with you here. Everyone is saying this was a huge mistake, but you're making $11/hr. Its not like its some irreplaceable job. However, regardless if he gives you the raise continue looking for another job because this is going nowhere.

I dislike negotiating, but I will certainly entertain any offers you feel equitable enough to retain my services at this company. Thank you for your time.

$13/hr is still cheap for the amount of work you do, you should start looking elsewhere anyway, you are doing yourself a disservice for staying at a place like that.

Find a new job and quit. Obviously you're not happy there and they really don't give a fudge about you since they pay new people more than you.

It can't be that hard to find a job that pays more than $10, can it?

That's bad advice. He'll only burn bridges and lose a possible reference down the road.

Regardless of the raise, start looking for a new job. Your boss does not appreciate your work. And now that you've demanded a raise, he's likely to give you that raise to bide time while he looks for a replacement.

You do not have to give 2-3 months notice. 2 weeks is the norm. Hell, in some situations, no notice is necessary.

OP, if you are not happy, look for another job, then give 2 weeks notice. Tell your boss that he can take the 2 to 3 months notice requirement up his ***.

Fairness is TWO WAYS street, give and take.

Has it ever occured to anyone that the OP MIGHT NOT be worth MORE money? Maybe his boss sees him for what he really is, not what the OP thinks he is...

Worst. Email. Ever.

All your points are correct, but if you wanted to keep that job and simply receive a pay raise, you went about it the wrong way with that unprofessional email. Now they'll either call your bluff and allow you to quit, or give you the money and fire you in a couple of months. Also, you should have asked for more than 13/hr and explained specifically how you more than earn your money just off your basic duties... then detailed the other duties you perform and why you feel the wage you are asking for is fair.

Anyway, it sounds like you really wanted to leave the company.... you'll get your wish.

When the boss started paying new hires more than you, did you raise the issue then?

This is how I see a manager handling this;
You basically threatened him in the email. If he meets your demands, he may feel that the other employees would see him as weak and/ or that you are more of a peer than an employee. This is not good for the employee/boss relationship.

If he let you go, he would show the other employees that no one is so valuable that he couldn't do it without them. It would also show the other employees that he is the boss and he makes the decisions on who gets paid what.

Hopefully, you haven't backed yourself into a corner.
