If you really want to boost your salary you should forget the dump you're at now, go back to school, get your degree and land a real job (a real degree at a decent school, not some crappy community college mickey mouse degree). You'll have a hard time earning good money otherwise

I'm finished my associates in a semester. Why would I leave now? I will leave when I have my A.S. Maybe I can make some more $$$$ with that. I will be transferring to a 4 year school next fall.

As far as what you should do..... you should keep looking and find another job fast. One thing about your first email is that you were clear about what you needed to be satisfied. Saying anything else to them is pretty useless. If you decide to ignore that advice and talk to them anyway, please do it in person. If you've been doing all that you say you've been doing with 2 years experience and an associates degree, you should have no problem finding more money elsewhere.

It's great to hear you plan on getting the 4 year degree. If you don't get it, it is very likely you will be paid poorly compared to colleagues who may know and contribute less than you but got their degrees.

I worked with a few people who never finished school due to getting job offers and it is now hurting them salary wise. Plus they're older now and don't want to have to go back to school. Just make sure that doesn't happen to you.

Let me preface this story... I've worked at this company a total of 4 years. I worked there from 2000 - 2003, and then I left for college. When I dropped out of that school I came back I've been there about 1.5 years since I came back. When I was working there before my boss was looking for people and I told him to hire my cousin. Within 6 months my cousin was making more then me -- my cousin never asked for a raise.

Recently they were looking for people again and they hired my friend. My friend started at the same rate I make now. He recently got a 10% raise and a better gas rate when on service calls. My friend never asked for a raise. Now the office is severly understaffed, and I'm one of the only people there that can handle the load. This was admitted by my boss and my friend. My boss stated that he'd need 2 - 3 months notice if I were to quit.

So now I'm pissed because my boss is trying to take advantage of me. I currently make 10/hr. My friend makes 11/hr.

Edit: I guess I should put what I do? LOL... I used to do only technical support. Since so many people have been fired and left I currently do: tech support, billing, service calls, cancellations, light server maintence, website updates, light php/html/perl, and writing proposals.

Here's the e-mail:
I've been here over a year since I was "rehired". I think it's time to reevaluate my hourly rate. I don't like going back and forth with offers and negotiations. I think a fair amount is $13. Also, when I go on a service call and ask for gas money (occasionally I haven't) I think $0.35 is a fair amount in order to offset current gas prices and trends.

Cliffs:
I've worked at this company 4 years
My boss keeps giving recently hired people more money then me
Even though I'm a better worker

Update: Monday 08/07/06
There was not one mention of my raise by my office manager. My boss called and asked to speak with the office manager. He didn't mention it and she didn't mention it. She did leave her desk (right behind me) and go to his desk. That could have been for a number of reasons though.

The office manager was particularly observant and critical of my activities today. Example conversation "Last Friday, on the service call why did you bring the computer back to the office?" "She didn't have the barcode scanner necessary to configure the POS system so I couldn't set it up. I had to leave the backup system in place." "Yeah, but why didn't you just leave it there" "There was no where to put it. Besides when I called you and told you exactly what I was going to do you never mentioned NOT to bring the system back." "They have a closet! The computer is there's and thus there responsibility." "Honestly, does it make a difference if I left it there or brought it back." "Not really, just trying to save the next person a trip lugging that thing around." "It's not a big deal I'll carry it to the car for whoever goes."

I haven't seen my GF in 6 weeks and she wants to come down tomorrow. I want to see her but I'm not sure if I should take a day off in the process of asking for a raise. I ate some chinese today and it did a number on me landing me in the bathroom for a good 20 minutes... I guess I could pull that as an excuse.

Update: 08/08/06

I called out from work 2 hours before I was supposed to be there and claimed to be sick. Really, I just wanted to spend the day with my gf. I just got this e-mail:

Hey Steve - [the owner] has set your increased rate to $11.50 per hour with 35
cents per mile for mileage allottment when you travel. The increase
started Monday the 7th. Thanks!

I'm really not sure what to do right now. All I know is I will be sending out my resume to anyone hiring. This is unacceptable. What should I do????

quit.. u said 13, they are playing games with 11.50.

quit now! else u look weak and they know they can just walk all over you since your threats are meaningless

I'd say take the olive branch and keep it awhile.
Be happy you even got a raise... especially since you havent finished your degree yet.
Most people without a degree dont even make 11.50 per hour without hard manual labor.

It'd be very hard for me to just quit without another job. I have bills man. I hope to find another job within a week since I decided I'm willing to work in Philly (1 hr away).

Dollar amounts are relative... $15 per hour in rural pennsylvania is a lot... $15 per hour in NY or California is peanuts... You have to factor in the cost of living for the region to truthfully determine your pay value. Like i said just be happy he got anything... and to OP stop comparing to what everyone around you does or made... all employment is not equal.

Unleess he's going to move, the OP needs to factor in commuting costs as well. It can be pretty expensive driving an hour each way (more in heavy traffic) both in gas and increased vehicle maintenance costs, as well as the extra toll on the body & spirit. Some days, commuting isn't bad, but there are those days, where it seems to take forever to get home. Traffic accidents can leave you sitting in a parking lot, on what was the freeway/expressway/tollway, etc., and make a bad commute even worse.
To justiy that much of a drive, it would take quite a bit more for me to quit a job and start commuting, unless I absolutely hated the job.

if you want more money, jump to another company

case in point, my raises:
started working 1999 as intern
graduated. got full time job in same company august 2001
2002, 20% raise. :D
2003, 7% raise, :)
2004, 4% raise
2005, worked my ass off wanting a promotion since i was at the high end of my pay grade. but ended up with 2% raise, :|
fed up, left and got new job, 21% raise
2006, didnt like job, quit and got another one, 40% raise :Q

now 2006 over before leaving first job in 2005 = 70% raise
all bonuses are not calculated, would close in to 90% range if i did include it

so, leave your friggin suck ass job if you want a decent raise

There's a train station 5 minutes from my house that takes you right into Philly. A monthly commuter pass is around 100/Mo. This is a good option because I'd be able to knock out most of my homework and studying on the ride to/from work. Any decent raise would easily cover the 100/mo.

The only thing is it's fscking hard to find a job where you can't work fulltime. I can work everyday except wednesdays I have class at 2. I think I'm going to call the schools I'm thinking of transferring to and seeing if they accept online creds. If so, I'm going to switch some of my classes online so I'm available to work FT.

Dude my wife makes almost 11 @ walmart there are jobs out there called TRADE JOBS and while they may not require a sdegrere or LABOR they require a skill.

As I look around my office no one make less than about 13 and most of them do not have degrees. I make well more than that and have no degree. both guys that work for me make more than 11 and neither has a degree. What we do posess is skill that was learned. The problem is that people want that 60K a year right out of college or high school and that is just not how the owrld works. You need to gain skill and EXPEREINCE to get good pay.

Now the OP mentioned that he is attending college and my question is when? only at night? Is he part time? I am guessing there is a little more to this story then we are hearing.

Right now, I'm full time. When school starts back up I am scheduled to work everyday 9:30-5:30, except wed. I will work 9:30-1. During school I work about 35 hours a week. I'd work more if I could pull a saturday or something, but we recently started closing on sat. to save the company money. I'm a fulltime student.

Not if you have a skill. Being able to repair computers is one such skill. For the work he's doing, he should be making a lot more.

you could do it that way, and then lose the best years of your life. i work in the summer and go to school when i am supposed to be going to school. you will regret this when you get older if you have the chance to do it another way. i am grateful of my situation and the fact that i can quit work during fall/sping. after college, all you have to look forward to is work until you get old...think about it.

it is easier to pay off loans with $20+ per hour than with half of that. School loan is lifetime investment. $30K is like a better new car...

My advice... stay away from low paying jobs, instead build future even if it hurts in the beginning. Because you're gonna work 40 more years, and think of earning potential with 4yr degree and without it. Avg engineer US salary is $73K.
