Update: I'm back, i can't install it as it requires a 3GS+ and I'm currrently using my old 3G, waiting for a big sale day, like the one in january to get a 4... 🙁 now I feel saaaad.

Uh wow, thats amazing.

I just tested it and its pretty accurate with large letters. Smaller text, not so much.

Heads up english-ites, this is free in the UK, i'm downloading now, will report back.

The app itself is free for everybody. But once you're in the app you have to pay for the dictionaries. And based on the demo dictionary that just reverses the words, it doesn't work very well at all. It only works well on all CAPS words with specific fonts. Cool idea, but it needs a ton of work to be useful to anybody traveling.

Then consider me disappointed.

So what? Engadget already showed off the Pleco app which uses your camera and reads Chinese.

This is a bit cooler, but the fact that it costs money isn't that bad.

The downside is I can't Installous it. Whoops. did I say that out loud?

To everyone who's disappointed, STFU. There's translation apps that take a picture and give you a translation. That's already cool. This is giving you the vision AS IF it's translated in front of your eyes as if you know the language. This is way cooler.

No it's very impressive but i was extra excited because i thought it was free...

I installed it on my iPhone for a few hours ago and used the word reversal to reverse a bunch of words on the bus stop etc around me. Worked flawlessly and it was really amazing.

Kinda reminds me of the movie "They Live!" though.

That is incredible. Text recognition and dynamic translation, all in one...and on smartphone hardware too. When is an android version coming out?

HOLY COW!!

I just downloaded it and sprung for the $5 Spanish to English translation - it's amazing! 😱 Showing it off at the office...people are freaking out 😀 I understand the technology - OCR, camera overlay, blah blah blah, but actually seeing it in action is really, really neat - thanks OP!

If they get Japanese working, I think I'll get an iPhone, download the app, and move to Japan. :hmm:

If they add a few more languages and possibly speech recognition/translation of words/basic phrases, I'd buy an iPhone.

I had an app for my old iPaq called Speerio Voice Translator. It had a thousand or so common phrases built in for several languages -- Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, and I believe Portuguese. You could say the phrase in English and the iPaq would read it back out in whatever language you needed. It did the reverse as well, I believe. The last I heard, they were adding (IIRC) Japanese and Chinese.

I messed with it for a few minutes on my phone just now -it is impressive but the demo is not impressive enough for me to spring $5 for the spanish-english. My hands apparently are too shaky and I see it overlaying new images but they only stay for like .25 sec before it tries again so it's always blinking.

You can take a snapshot in the app to freeze it.
