Then can we agree the 5800 is approximately as useful as a 9700Pro, if you're willing to accept 4X8X as your setting?
Yeah I guess so, although in games that use a reasonable number of shaders the 9700 Pro should still pull away.

Edit: Woah, dude you STOMPED your card!

i once stomped a mobo, one of the ECS pos boards. And it didnt satisfy me so i ran it over repeatedly with my car.

lmao... good think something didn't poke a hole in your tire or something; i'd hate to see what you would do to your car 😛

a fair observation to be sure. i think in many instances the 5800u is a decent card, but overall, performance being the main criteria, i would choose a 9700pro. the 5800 has more charm tho, from a uniqueness point of view 😉

Wow, some of you here seem to need a little anger management 😉

And then we all lived happily ever after 😀

Rollo I think 5800 is a decent card. I used to have one before the summer 03 for a month until the store could get me my 9800pro. I'm glad I didn't change my mind back then to keep it or change it for a 5900. That's what the salesman tried to convince me. And given the time (before HL benchies) I was ready to.

From my little experience on the card it was great. Quiet, reliable and higly O/C. Just not the best value for my money. But it's a matter of preference always...

ECS makes me need anger management >< I'm 0/5 with those POS mobos.

I'd never argue otherwise, presumably my four year old won't mind when he gets it, as Sponge Bob and Sinbad have no shaders. 😉

rbV5:
LOL, probably not too late to shoot it though
With the luck I have had with that card, a BB would richochet off the chrome gpu cover and shoot my eye out, like the kid in "The Christmas Story". 🙂 Nah, stepping on it and putting a final end to it's saga, along with getting a 5800 Ultra, has left me happy and looking to the future. When I look back (fondly)on my college party days, a $200 waste of money seems like spit in the ocean of money wasted. 😉

I had one of those (although they called it an "Alton" back then) and can appreciate the stomping/hit and run instinct. I used to be fond of saying "In a sweatshop somewhere in Asia, some very evil men are laughing hard at the U.S." about Alton/PCChips/PCWave/ECS. They are some very shiite products.
You used to need a private investigator to find their website, it was like they wanted to hide!

Hey no other card ever had a 60s folk song about it AFAIK:
"Big nV" by Jimmy Dean
Ev'ry mornin' at the den you could hear him arrive
He is the original nV30, not the crap thirty five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big nV.
(Big nV, Big nV) Big Bad nV (Big nV)

Nobody seemed to know where nV called home
CompUSA and Best Buy seemed to leave him alone
He didn't say much in 2d, kinda quiet and shy
But if you started a game, babies and dogs would cry

Somebody said he came to run DX9
To give nVidia AA, Anisotropic without mip lines
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Canadian fellow to the Promised Land-Big nV
(Big nV, Big nV) Big Bad nV (Big nV)

Then came the day at the bottom of the case
When an AGP slot cracked and men started cryin'
Gamers were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd fragged their last-'cept nV

Through the heat and the smoke of this man-made hell
Burned a giant of a card that the gamers knew well
When his fan spun up, it gave out a moan
And like a giant toaster oven he just stood there alone-Big nV
(Big nV, Big nV) Big Bad nV (Big nV)

LOL- time to frag

I play at 1024x768 as well. I also play with 2Qx AA and 2x AF. I know alot of people call quincunx a 'blur filter', but I like it better than 4x even. Makes games look smoother IMO.

Rollo,

I'd keep the stomped card, I saw the pics over at NVNews.net and the fan seems still in tact, you never know when you need a fan. At least keep parts of it, in case that 5800U goes wrong. Like a heatsink come off or fan stop working.

reason I say is, My fan stopped working on my 5950U 2 days ago....but it wasnt faulty. It had TOO MUCH dust in it! I cleaned it, and it's working fine, hehe.

I dont see why people are so amazed...If I had the extra money, I'd buy a Matrox Parhelia just for it's 2d Quality. But I "need" my 3d, and the parhelia lacks that. If Matrox can pull off comparable performance of ATI/NV then I'd switch 😀

Hehehe, do yourself a favour and don't go seeing if you can go 1/6. 😉 Sounds to me like the Acer boards I had the misfortune of dealing with at my old job. Pieces of crap through and through.

Well damn, your four year old has a better rig than I do. :/

With the troubles and headaches their boards caused people, are you at all surprised? 🙂

Good point. Behind Osama, they're probably the most hated/hunted men on Earth. They probably have food tasters.
(envisions some guy sitting at his desk with a tear rolling down his cheek, thinking "But...but.. we make a good, inexpensive product"

I don't know that I could get the fan into the FlowFX case, but you raise an interesting point: What if the FlowFX bites the dust?
I could put the copper sinks off the 5800 on the RAM, I wonder if a big a$$ cpu hsf could cool the savage beast?

I can tell you when you can't tell the difference between the 5800 U and a 9800 Pro at UT2004,
Would you like a GF3 Rollo? At 640 x 480 you won't be able to tell a difference either and you'll probably win online as well. That must mean it's a great card.

Seriously Rollo, this 5800 fetish of yours is really ridiculous now and the justifications you're making for it are simply ludicrous.

You want to test different cards because you like trying them out? Fine, just don't come in here and try to proclaim equality using feeble arguments that could apply to almost every card in existance.

Not everybody feels the need to run at 1600x1200

Personally I prefer 1024 x 76 even though I can easily run 1600x1200

flash the gigabyte bios so the core runs at 520MHz..

Well that would be a good idea if I bought this card to have nVidia's current best performance, but I think I'll leave it intact because I bought it as a collectable.

I'll buy a nV40 if it is better than the R420.

LOL you're such a hypocrite rollo. I still remember the old Voodoo5 6000 threads where you called everyone an idiot for collecting video cards.

No, you remember me saying that paying $1500 for what's basically an unusable video card is nuts, because I don't think the market value will hold on them.

There's a big difference to most people in throwing away $1500 for something to look at and trading a video card worth $180-$200 for another video card that has basically the same functionality and is also worth around $200..

Also, I have since apologized for my position on that, because after all, it's your money and how you choose to spend it is your business.

Whachoo talkin bout Virtual????

You're right to some extent, I shouldn't have been so disagreeable with the $1500 V5 6K clan. I did think it was somewhat different as that card is somewhat shy of what many would consider "usable" so in that case you're basically just buying it to look at it. You're right though, and I was wrong. My apologies to any offended by my opinion on the 6Ks "value".

S'allright. I did waste too much time complaining about people "wasting" their money. Who's to say what's collectable but the buyer?

$212 for first DOA, 1 9800Pro, $27 cash for VGA Silencer. I see your point.
