I will say that if you were more aware of the nature of self hate you would be less surprised by the phenomenon of allied Nazis. I covered that in another post, somewhere here today, meaning I expresses my opinion as to its origin.

To become consious of how much we hate ourselves and how deeply suppressed the feelings are is the last thing on earth we want to happen. The ego is tricky and knows how to deflect. This is why the hero needs a guide to offer a magic sword and a polished mirror shield. The hydra has many heads and seeing them directly will freeze ones courage.

Well, I guess the important point for me is that self hate is based on the belief that we deserve hate, and every religion in the world was meant, in my opinion, to counter that feeling, to help us transcend that lie, so my guess is that he stepped right over his negatives via a religious experience.
