Some people act like getting a pit is a death sentence. Nothing could be further from the truth. Fatalities from pit attacks are actually fairly rare. If you look at the facts behind the attacks it generally involves either old people or young kids/children, and it often involves a pack of two or more pits. Additionally, it also seems to happen in primarily low-income areas. My guess would be that happens because those pits are not properly trained/socialized. There are rare exceptions to that but there are other dogs besides pits involved in human casualties as well. Animals, even allegedly domesticated ones, can kill you.

I've had many dogs, pits included, and pits have always been the most awesome of them all. My last one, an American Bulldog, was with us for 16 years. She died the day before last Thanksgiving. Best dog evar.

Now I've rescued a poxer (pug/boxer mix). She's a different challenge but I would never hesitate to own a pit. Raised responsibly, there is no better dog.
