Woah! Finally joined the 1GB club.

i thought you were gonna post something about Gmail or something like that.

anyways, i joined THIS 1 gig club about two months ago, when i got my laptop

hehe Congrats man 🙂

Let me know when you get to the 4gb club 🙂

(Yes, I have 4 Gigs of RAM in 1 machine)

More importantly do you use the 1gig? I think I only have 350MB left in my server (dam oracle eats RAM for breakfast, even for small test DBs), nevermind my other services.

you know I ran some test on Oracle, it actually had diminishing returns once it got too much memory.

It was on a quad p3 xeon 900, 2 GB RAM, we upped it to 4GB, and the thing slowed to a crawl, couldt figure out why. Turned out Oracle just fills up all available RAM with its query cache. And before it executes any queries, it checks the cache to see if its in there. If the cache is too big, it takes longer to search it than it does to run the query. Im not sure, but I think theres a setting in Oracle where you can limit the amount of RAM the cache uses, test out what would be a good amoutn for your system, as soon as the results start to slow down, take the cache back down a notch.

is there a 1.5 gig club ?

And use I need every bit of it. I am constantly working on some 3D stuff and/or video editing. And don't forget the memory hog that Photoshop is!

I could hit 1gb usage on my desktop easy. Will probably get at least that much ram on my next machine.

On a typical day I'm running all of these at once:

WindowsXP
Visual Studio 2003
Outlook 2003
Excell 2003
Winamp 5
Trillian 3
4 or 5 Browser windows
1 or 2 Terminal Services Clients
SQL Enterprise Manager
SQL Query Analyzer
Paint Shop Pro 9.0
Azureus
And on average 3 or 4 folder windows, half of them to network locations

All the while bridging my wireless connection to my girlfriends computer, and she's sitting there sucking up my bandwith looking at high res puppy pictures all day.
