"One of the most fashionable notions of our times is that social problems like poverty and oppression breed wars."

News to me!

"Most wars, however, are started by well-fed people with time on their hands to dream up half-baked ideologies or grandiose ambitions, and to nurse real or imagined grievances."

For example?

If you can't see how that quote applies so perfectly to the current war that George W Bush (well-fed people with time on their hands to dream up half-baked ideologies or grandiose ambitions) has hatched for supposedly humanitarian purposes (fashionable notions of our times is that social problems like poverty and oppression breed wars), then you'll never get it.

Yet, if we'd waited another few months for inspections to work, and they didn't, then this wouldn't have been a "half baked yada yada" war? Get a clue! :disgust:

Because presidents have nothing but time on their hands.

Because presidents have nothing but time on their hands.

You limp wristed liberals can bend over and take 9-11 up the ass all you want, but some of us would prefer to DO SOMETHING about it. BTW, repeating sappy quotes and singing Kumbaya ain't gonna cut it. You better take it easy there Ornery or you will be taking time off to regain your composure!

I agree completely Ornery. But I think some people overreacted to the quote a bit. I like MLJ quotes a lot, and ghandi (What do you think about western civilization? I think it would be a good idea.")......buut

I think the quote is good, but doesn't apply. A social situation in a democracy can't be an allusion or an analogy to a democracy trying to protect it's security, or a world community versus a totalitarian government. Alos remember that there was a sect during that time that thought a viloent uprising was the only way to win. MLK was for non-violence as a means to furthering a cause.

You can do all the handholding you want, and have all the love you want, but sometimes violence is the only answer. I really wish we could live in an alternate universe where there was no violence. Oh, nevermind, I don't. Because we'd all be in the third Reich.

Hate cannot drive hate out that is true, but what greater love is there than to lay down your life for your brother?

Well you could use that to justify the US troops laying down their lives to "free" the iraqi's.
