"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishhing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor extablish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate! In fact, violence increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that."
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

True in some respects, but it also sounds like MLK Jr was mixing violence with hate and evil. wheras they are three separate concepts.

So Perknose, are you saying that we should have loved Saddam more and that would have made him give up his banned weapons and stop torturing the people of Iraq?

What is up with you man? He just posted a quote that can apply to the times we are in. Do you really think he is saying we should love Saddam? C'mon man...the propaganda is getting old.

Just because somebody uses analogies to explain something doesn't mean it's necessarily true.

Sure it does, if you were to go over to Iraq and give Saddam a big kiss on his armpit and then hug him... who knows.

And etech asked if this would really work with Saddam. What's wrong with that?

Because he AGREES with the posted approach... He knows it wouldnt work with Saddam, but that's beside the point, it helps validate in his mind his opposition to this war.

Oh yeah...now I'm agreeing with what approach now? The loving Saddam part or just the kissing the armpit approach?

Edit: And pray tell how you know whether or not I am against this war? You guys have to make this such a polarizing issue. There is only two sides...black and white...good and evil... blah, blah.

Nope. He asked him if we should have "loved Saddam". The guy just posted a quote...not a method for dealing with Saddam. It seems like the prevalent attitude around here is to constantly jump on each other over different posts and read more meaning into something than is really there.

Platitudes can sound nice but sometimes they just don't work in the real world.

reading the orginal quote would have helped also.

And what was the purpose of the quote? This thread was posted in THE WAR AND THE MIDDLE EAST forum... so i would assume it has to do with the war, but maybe that's reading too much into this.

I read the quote...and nowhere does the original poster say we should have used anything in the current situation. He just posted a quote...relax people.

Ok..whatever. The point is..all that was posted was a quote. You guys are the ones reading stuff into it...

You wouldn't be making fun of ebonics, would you?

Hmmmm - We love freedom and our country so much that we are willing to send our young (our love) to drive out evil. The quote seems to fit fine.

Absolutely right,....love for your own country and love for your beliefs in trying to save a people from a ruthless dictator, and love for your own a$$ so it doesn't get chemically or biologically attacked by a madman.

  1. Topic title sucks.
  2. Quote is lame. Violence may have a "weakness" or two, but it's
necessity outweighs those negatives in the context of this war.
  3. Why is this topic in this forum?

Very few people could speak the truth as well as MLK. Every sentence in that quote rings with truth, to me.

But sometimes we lack the wisdom or the skill to reach some people. We have failed to reach Saddam in this case. I don't mean Bush in particular, I mean all of us who think the situation in Iraq has to change.

At some point we have to face the fact that our own inability to bring change without violence means we have to choose between allowing the violence that is represented by Saddam and the choices he has made to continue, or using violence ourselves with the hope we can do as little damage as possible and as quickly as possible restore the situation to a place where violence isn't necessary to solve conflicts.

I like the quote, I like Ghandi, I like MLK, I like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, I like peace, and I like our troops. But Saddam Hussein certainly doesn't care about them, and would most certainly find a way to make each one of them wish they were dead if they lived in his country. Good quote, but like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, whom I had the pleasure of seeing speak last week, I think that their policies are far too logical and rational for people with little or no respect for human life. Archbishop Desmond Tutu believes that a Truth and Reconciliation committee like the one in South Africa, would work in Iraq. I wish I could say the same, but Hussein has proven that he'll only respond to violence. Sad as it is, there comes a time when you can say "Okay kill whomever you like, as long as its in your country and you don't tell anybody, torture them all to hell, that's cool, just know that we'll be here waiting for you to join us in a peaceful and happy world" or you can say "enough, we'll accidentally kill a few of your innocent people, but there 1,000 dying in your country every year just from starvation, and you've killed and tortured a couple hundred thousand people in the last 20 years, get out of your country or eat a MOAB!"

One of the most fashionable notions of our times is that social problems like poverty and oppression breed wars. Most wars, however, are started by well-fed people with time on their hands to dream up half-baked ideologies or grandiose ambitions, and to nurse real or imagined grievances.
