i try to stay away from this forum, but i found this article hilarious and had to post it for the lulz.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/28/us/politics/28teaparty.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

Mr. Grimes, who receives Social Security, has filled the back seat of his Mercury Grand Marquis with the literature of the movement, including Glenn Beck’s “Arguing With Idiots” and Frederic Bastiat’s “The Law,” which denounces public benefits as “false philanthropy.”

“If you quit giving people that stuff, they would figure out how to do it on their own,” Mr. Grimes said.

She liked that the Tea Party was patriotic, too. “They said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the national anthem,” she said.

She had taken a job selling sportswear at Macy’s. But when her husband found her up early and late taking care of Tea Party business, he urged her to take a leave. When the store did not allow one, she quit.

“I guess I just found my calling,” she said.

these people are walking facepalms.

edit: one more great quote-

“All I know is government was put here for certain reasons,” Ms. Reimer said. “They were not put here to run banks, insurance companies, and health care and automobile companies. They were put here to keep us safe.”

apparently we are only supposed to be kept safe from the evil terrorists- it's fine for the government to start worthless wars all over the world, but don't let those GODDAMN COMMIES try and regulate domestic industry for the benefit of the people.

This reminds me of the tea party blogger who encouraged people to break windows of dem party headquaters, and took credit for the incidents which occurred afterwards. He is apparently speaking at a rally in Virginia on 4/19 - the anniversary of Waco and the OCB, where people are bringing their guns because this is apparently the closest you can get to the capital building with openly carried firearms.

Turns out the guy lives off social security disability checks.

He and others do not see any contradictions in their arguments for smaller government even as they argue that it should do more to prevent job loss or cuts to Medicare. After a year of angry debate, emotion outweighs fact.

This is the most disturbing part of the article. It's not even funny. It's just bizarre. Are these people brain damaged?

I would be willing to bet that a majority of people living off disability are wingnuts. They are just against "socialism" when it doesn't directly benefit them.

Technically you forced him to pay into SS his entire life. Maybe by living off it he's just getting his compensation back. Or helping bring it down by helping to drain it. Your choice.

This. I think Social Security was a bad idea but by the same token, I've been forced to pay into it my whole life under the idea that it would be there for me when I retire. It isn't hypocritical in the slightest for me to expect it back even though I dislike SS. I deserve my money back though all of us know we aren't going to see it.

You lefties don't want some of us to receive it because of the "ironing" of us receiving it while denouncing SS? Fine by me -- stop taking it out of my taxes and give me a lump sum payment of the money I've paid into the system.

You mean you don't have any money saved for retirement? Do you also have money saved to pay for HI when you retire? You know so you won't have to use that other socialistic entitlement Medicare.

BTW you might consider me a "Leftie" but those political test on the net that determine where you stand politically classifies me more of a Centrist. I guess not being a Wingnut like you makes me a "Leftie" in your eyes.

one would hope he is saving for retirement.

the point being, if you don't want SS, you shouldn't have to pay into it. but since we are all *forced* to pay into SS, it is not wrong to expect some form of benefit from the system even while saying it sucks (which it does).

Of COURSE I have money saved for retirement besides SS. Are you trying to say that I should be happy with those savings and I don't need to get any SS? Socialism or not, if I am being forced to pay into a system for things like SS and Medicare under the premise that it will be there for me when I retire, guess what? I better get it. Even though I despise SS and MC, I'm paying into the system and better get my benefits. If not, then they should stop stealing my money and let me invest it. This is not a difficult concept nor is it hypocritical.

Believe me, I'd rather not pay for either (SS or MC) and have that money available to invest elsewhere.

BTW you might consider me a "Leftie" but those political test on the net that determine where you stand politically classifies me more of a Centrist. I guess not being a Wingnut like you makes me a "Leftie" in your eyes.

No, actually, I don't consider you a lefty. I did, but lately I have been pleasantly surprised by your responses. If wanting to keep the money I make and expecting the government to live up to its word when it forcibly takes my money makes me a wingnut, then this is a sad, sad country.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner!

The guy mentioned in the article would be a hypocrite if SS were optional and he chose to use it while decrying "big government." However, this is not the case -- the guy was forced to pay into it and is therefore entitled to receive benefits under it. What is he supposed to do? Say "No, I don't want the money I've been forced to pay into the system for 30+ years back." Come on folks, this isn't tough.

Wanting to keep your money doesn't make you a Wingnut. You thinking I'm a Leftie does or would have.Since you don't then you aren't;)

However the guy in the OP sure as hell is.

So freakin' lame. SS probably saved Grimes' bacon from living under a bridge or in a refrigerator box, but he and the usual Righties denounce it, anyway, 'cuz it's soshulist...

He doesn't have to take it. Maybe he should stand up for his principles and just starve...

“If you quit giving people that stuff, they would figure out how to do it on their own,” Mr. Grimes said.

Not him, of course... somebody else. Faced with the results of their own stupidity on a personal and political level, Teabaggers just go to Disneyland...

I think maybe the guy who hates socialism but is being supported by socialist programs needs to be thankful for the benefit.

not running around in a grand marquis doing the dirty work for millionaires like Glen Beck.

simply put, if the idiot doesn't like SS he should make decisions to improve his life so he doesn't have to rely on SS. I'm not going to give the guy credit by saying he CHOSE to go on SS so he can use all that hard earned money he put into the system to begin with. Reminds me of someone's signature around here about choosing to be poor because of the tax benefits... lol!

So if I show up at your house when you get your first job and hold a gun to your head to force you to deposit part of every paycheck you earn for the rest of your life in a savings account, but you don't appreciate that I did that, you would just leave that money sitting in the account? Really?

Even if someone has plenty of money saved for retirement, why should they not receive benefits they were forced to pay into, regardless if they wanted to originally pay or not.

Perhaps you are advocating allowing people to opt out of SS and medicare?
