With my hardware, what settings on Farcry should be playable?

AMD 64 Venice 3000+
1gig Valueselect Corsair DDR400 ram
MSI 6800 128mb (325/600)

Well I tried FRAPS while playing. In the training the section of the game with these settings:

Resolution: 1280x1024
AA: 4x
AF: 8x
Details and Effects: Very High all of them

and I'm getting 30-45 fps outdoors in the jungle and 50-70 indoors.

Is that about right?

What you find playable might be unplayable to others & vise versa.

Like Nick said the only way to find out is by playing.

Like Budman, says, it really depends on the person what "playable" would be. I have a fairly high tolerance for lower framerates (either that or my eyesight sucks), and my eyes can't see the difference between 40 FPS and 100+ FPS. Lower than 40, then I would probably be able to see the stuttering and lack of smoothness. But I've heard people complain that even 60 FPS is too low for them. Anyways, I can turn all the performance settings up to max in Far Cry with my 6800 vanilla and it's still playable for me. But YMMV of course.

Amber, are you saying all settings are on Very High? Also, what AA or AF settings and what resolution would you be using?

Play around with the settings till you find something you like, or leave it on auto-detect..right now I'm at 1280x1024, all on max(even AA and AF) and my fps is 35-40...I feel its very smooth with no lag, but others might not agree and want 60+ fps.

Yes, it's set to Very High, full antialiasing (4x). The resolution is only 1024x768 though (old LCD monitor that won't go any higher), some people might prefer higher.

Ok the reason I ask is becuase when using the Farcry configuration tool, and pressing Auto-Detect, it sets everything to low for me.

Your eyes cant see above 24fps, so as long as it stays above that should be fine. You may want to aim for an average of about 40-45fps, so that it doesn't drop below 24.

Since you slowdown outdoors it sounds like you need a more weather resistant setup. The tropics are harsh especially now! :p

Those are very nice framerates considering the settings and your card. How about hdr, can your card play it at decent frame rates?

Thats probably about right, since you've got AA at 4X and AF at 8X.. Do you have the latest chipset drivers from you chipset manufacturer and not your mobo company? Do you have the latest video drivers? Latest patches? Defragged? Tighten your ram timings if possible? Overclock your video card/CPU? While the last 2 aren't going to improve stability unless you set it up properly, you will see an improvement in performance, especially because of the fact that I think the 6800=teh 6600GT (about).

I have latest everything.

Anyhow, make that 40-60fps indoors. Outdoors its still 30-50fps. But it mostly stays around 40fps.

that sounds like something a film maker would say... movies are filmed at 24 fps, but as a game player I want at least 60! If you're saying you can't tell the difference between 24 fps and 60, then you are not a gamer!

If you can't tell the difference, then why does my monitor default at 60 Hz rather than 24???

yeah the difference between 30fps and 60 is quite noticeable.

An update: I notice that framerate drops by 10 frames if I turn water quality on ULTRA.
