With Intel processors being so expensive these days, is the 860k viable?

...it's mostly the dollar right now, but I noticed the increase even while our dollar was at parity. I just wish we got more of the screamin' deals you yankees get.

Canadian's will never get good deals as much as the States. They way the world economy is set up right now by the powers that be is that the rest of the world subsidizes the US in one way or another. At leased Canadians are not forced into paying $500 a month for a mandatory health care insurance plan.

$500 a month? Blame your crappy employer then. Even an entry level grocery store job at my wife's work would get us both very good insurance for $170 a month for us and any kids. I've got us on military insurance (tri-care) at about that price as well.

Maybe find a better job that pays for it? It's a "free market" and if you had "better skills" you wouldn't have this "problem."

In the US we have basic sales tax on these purchases. No VAT, etc. We pay for those services differently rather than baking into goods. Not to get off-topic, but look at a lot of other goods that do cost a lot more here like drugs and healthcare.

Again, goods and services 'cost differently' in many places, but at the end of the day, the 'true' cost is generally similar.

The G3258 costs $60, and the i3-4370 costs $150. If anyone really thinks Hyperthreading and an extra 1MB of cache is worth $90, well, a fool is born every day.

You might if you are playing one of the new console ports that wont even start the game on a two thread cpu. I know some of them have hacks to make them work, but some i think still dont. Totally due to bad porting, but "it is what it is".

So this hypothetical fool spent money on a broken port and spent more money on an overpriced processor. "Fool me once" comes to mind.

Yes. I can also look up prices and calculate price/performance ratios. I know it probably sounds like witchcraft, but anyone can do it if they give it the old college try!

I'm sorry, are you actually arguing that your 5 year old laptop would be at all comparable to a Broadwell ultrabook? It will be slower, have a lower res screen, have a fraction of the battery life, be twice (three times?) as thick, and have a fraction of the memory. Other than those things, I guess they are the same laptop.

But I actually use my laptop I don't buy it compare thickness or decor as if it was artwork or a paperweight. If my main purpose for buying a computer was to compare how trendy it was to flamboyant metros in a Starbucks I would buy a MacBook. And the battery life is a red herring since these ultra books are using tiny 3 cell batteries so any increase in efficiency is lost with the significantly smaller battery.

Prices are more expensive in Canada now than 2 years ago because the Canadian dollar dropped a lot. 2 years ago it was almost at parity with the US dollar, so that explains that.

Now, $240 for an i5 is still an amazing deal as nowadays u don't need to upgrade your cpu for 4-5 years. so 240/4 is $60/year. That's really cheap for a high end cpu. I spend more a month on drinking out by far!
