How did it work out 90 years ago? LOL You want to go back to the middle age too?

It worked out fine. Servers served for the wage they were paid. People enjoyed their dining experience. I dont need to go back to the middle ages. In this country until Prohibition tipping was frowned upon. Tipping was brought about in this country not as a way to get better service. But because restaurant owners hit by the lack of alcohol sales told their servers to ask the fat cat to make up for their lack of wage.

The whole premise tipping is a means to guarantee good service isnt based in any reality. It started in this country because owners didnt want to pay their employees a normal wage anymore because the lack of alcohol sales hurt their profit.

You can stay in the 1920s. Make sure you keep the slaves locked up before going out.

We tippers will continue to dine at Flemings with our big fat tips. 😀

Incentive based and tip based are two different things.

So sorry I forgot, tip based salary has a big fat base pay.

During college, I waited ghost tables and made $30/hr. Although we had no customer, dollar bills magically appeared on tables. 😎 It was the easiest job ever. People were so jealous of our earning, no one could ever get job like this.

Or you could actually wonder why the cooks are making far less then servers, due to tipping. Not everything is a slippery slope or equally and justly applied across all sectors. I suppose that attempting to place that argument where no one has made it, and where it doesn't belong reinforces some belief in truth that you hold. I dunno.

But this kind of challenging thought is rejected by your passionate truth. I'll back off and leave it time to ruminate. Perhaps to no use, but we'll see.

Simple supply and demand. You are blindly listening to one restaurant owner who is trying to create publicity for himself to generate more profit in his pocket.

Take off the blinders and put on your Freakonomics hat. In the podcast they told you about the abundant supply of cooks. Too many young people going into this industry with fancy ideas from watching too much Netflix and Food Channel. In many situations, they are also competing with illegals for the same job. Terrible career choice unless you are truly gifted with a magic tongue. Biggest problem here is, most wait staff is not trying to make it a career, but the kitchen staff is. However, this is something a free market will take care. People will stop paying $30k to become a chef at Panda Express and find a better career path.

Be a funny Sushi chef, and you can make more than the owner.

This thread is still going? Lol. I mean it's obvious any former server would be pro-tip. Look at this thread, every single argument they make is pro server. They don't give a fuck about anyone else it's me-me-me.

The tide is turning. 5 years ago the thought of a no-tip restaurant was laughable. Now many restaurant owners are open to the idea, and more importantly more consumers are aware of the economic issues in the kitchen due to increased media coverage.

It's been a fun debate y'all, thanks for the posts.

I absolutely prefer going back to a time where tips werent required by customers to make up for owners not properly paying their employees.

Are you under the impression because a restaurant is filled the customers enjoy the tipping experience?

😀 This is a classic cheap bastard response.

No, all the customers walk in happy and leave with a sour face due to tipping. 😎

One restaurant group at a time change will happen; the future at mom & pop restaurants is less certain.

I have a feeling, that the anti-tippers are too cheap in the first place, that they'll avoid a restaurant like Panda Inn. They prefer Panda Express so they don't have to tip (or the price better reflect their spend ability, or both). They take a new girlfriend to Panda Inn on the first date but cringe at calculating 18% for the tip, but take her to fast food joints there after claiming the "convenient" factor. They are up-tight at social events and are not as fun to be around especially at restaurants and bars.

Nail in the head?

You keep making up these delusional fantasies about how we're too cheap to tip because you don't have any rational arguments against our true belief of paying higher menu prices to pay the entire staff higher wages and avoid the stupid ass tip line bullshit.

Why do you keep saying stupid things like this? The argument is to pay the exact same amount without tip per meal that people pay with tipping today, just eliminating the useless tip part and replacing it with wages.

One of the reasons this debate has been so lopsided is that you don't seem to be able to generate many rational or data based positions, you're all attempted insults and puffery.

Totally nailed it!!! Thanks for the confirmation.

Since my feeling has been confirmed, allow me to recommend a solution to your problem:

Next time you go to a restaurant feeling the pain of tipping, just remember the name of your savior: Danny Meyer, and say a prayer. You'll walk out with a smile on your face, instead of a frown. The future will feel brighter.

Happy dining cheap bastards!!!

Im a cheap bastard because I am willing to high menu prices to pay employees what they are worth? I know this is your stupid response. But like so many things in this thread it makes little sense.

Anyways, so you are backing away from your position customers enjoy paying the restaurant employees?

You are not taking losing an argument very well at all, haha. How old are you?
