You mean wisdom teeth? ;) heehee I've never had any. My body just never produced them. I'm 26, so it's not like I'm still waiting for them to come in either.

It's not fun. If you have a choice go for the whole IV where they knock you out... You'll be recovering for about 3 days. If you want fast recovery just get a local and the gas... but it will hurt and you'll be watching them the entire time while they are chopping your gums up.

Go for the knockout! You don't wanna be awake for that....

edit: oh yeah, recovery....don't plan on going to work the next day. Have plenty of tea bags to bite down on in the back of your mouth. And have liquid food on hand ;)

I had mine pulled about four years ago. While it definitely wasn't fun, it wasn't extremely horrible. My mother decided that it would be a good idea to have the surgery done while I was out of school for Thanksgiving so I didn't miss any school. I didn't agree, of course. The day of the surgery, I didn't really feel like doing much of anything except sleeping and I would do the same, if I were you. You probably won't be hungry, but eat ice cream if you eat anything at all. Nice and soft and cold. The day after I had them removed, I don't recall wanting to eat much more, but the pain of the surgery wasn't as bad as it was the day of. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time came out the day before the surgery, so I played that all day (literally) the day after the surgery. Basically, just sleep, eat ice cream, and find something to do to take your mind off any pain you might be experiencing.

The experience varies for everyone. Some are ready to go in a couple of days, others are down for about a week. Personally I had some swelling for about 1 1/2 weeks, and lost a lot of flexibility in my jaw (couldn't eat a hamburger properly for about a month). The pain didn't last that long, of course.

The Vicodin was worth it all, though I would recommend getting off the pain medication as soon as possible. If they give you some powerful stuff, you will be amazed at how short of a time it takes to get addicted. After I went off it I had trouble sleeping for a couple of weeks.

I'm also going to recommend (as others here have) that you go for the knockout, the thought of hearing them rip into my jaw just doesn't seem pleasant. It may be the wussy way to do it, but so be it.

That bad for you?? I hope mine goes well...

They told me to do the ice pack thing every 15 min to keep swelling down. Anything else you would suggest?

Is getting addicted to this stuff really that easy?? Having trouble sleeping after getting off of it sounds pretty bad.

I'm surprised you're only get three taken out. Usually they take them out in pairs, or else the remaining tooth doesn't have an opposite and that can cause some sort of problem. And 26 years old is not too late to grow wisdom teeth.

Anyhow, I had two taken out at 27, and two more at 35. Neither time was it anything to worry about. Some people's are harder to get out than others, I guess. The first time, I came home and hung drywall while biting on the gauze. The second time I went back to the office and just mumbled for the rest of the day. I also drooled until the novacaine wore off.

You do have to watch out for the infamous "dry socket" though. A coworker got that and was in severe pain for a week. Follow the dentist's directions as closely as you can. Don't drink through a straw and all that.

Here's an interesting tidbit: When I had mine out last time, my dentist (a pretty cool guy) told me not to smoke for 24 hours. I said "yeah, right". He said he's required to say that, but unofficially, If I'm going to smoke, smoke unfiltered cigs to avoid the suction on the clot in the socket. So I bought a pak of Pall Malls instead of my normal Merit Ultra Lights. I didn't have any trouble.

Oh and one more thing. I always stop at the bar across the street before I go into the dentist's for two double shots of Wild Turkey. When he gets out that needle and says "you're going to feel a little pinch", I say "oh no I'm not". Heh heh.

Another time I'll tell about when my dentist root-canalled the wrong tooth.

I had mine pulled out last summer. It wasn''t that bad, but I'm a fast recover. The stuff they give you to knock you out is worst than the actual surgery. I think everybody is different with getting wisdom teeth taken out. Mine were not even out, so they didn't hurt hardly at all.

This is the first I've ever heard of people being knocked-out for wisdom teeth. In fact, I've never been knocked out for any detal work. Just novacaine. Its also the first I've ever heard of anyone being laid up for more than a day from wisdom tooth removal.

You've got nothing to worry about.

To give you a relative sense of discomfort I've ranked the following things in order of worst to best:

- Rotated vertabrae in neck
- The thought of Al Gore winning the presidency
- Penis caught in zipper
- broken nose
- common cold
- all day migraine
- two wisdom teeth removed
- stubbed toe on bed-frame wheel
- accidently put hand lotion on toothbrush
- Anandtch forums are slow tonight

I would have thought that zipper one would be at the top...

When you put the gauze pads on the spot make sure you put half on the cheek side as well as on top. My dentist didn't tell me to do that so the blood clot was forced down into the gum and nearly got infected. Hurts a lot and makes your cheeks swollen for longer than they should.

My experience having my wisdom teeth pulled was actually pretty good. I got general anasthetic by IV. The key: WELCOME THE DRUGS. I have a friend who went to the same doctor that I did, and he's generally pretty much an ass about being 'in charge' and stuff, and the doc gave him 1.5x the legal amount of anasthetic before he went under, and he had a generally miserable experience. I, on the other hand, went in and was thinking to myself the whole time, "WELCOME THE DRUGS, WELCOME THE DRUGS" and I was out like 30 seconds after he opened the drip. The procedure went flawlessly, and when they woke me up, I was able to walk under my own power to the car, even though they wanted me to use a wheelchair. I didn't feel woozy or dizzy or anything. I quit the pain medication before I ran out of it (I think they had given me like 3 days of narcotics), because the pain subsided relatively quickly.

The lesson: IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD. If you want it to be painful, you can make it painful. If you want to make it painless, it'll be (relatively) painless. Do NOT resist the drugs (as I know my friend did, and it's very possible to do!). In your mind, think of this as a GOOD thing, and something that's positive for your health, and it'll come out better. ;)

I had one of mine pulled out 2 years ago. Not that bad.
They gave me anaesthetic and started to dig in!

First they took the BIG tool and split it in 2 halves then they took the pliers and started pulling.
I could hear the bone crack and blood was sucked from my mouth.
PLOP!! Out it came.

Went home the same day. No worries.

It depends on how they extract them. Usually if they are doing more than one they knock you out. I unfortunately had just one top one removed. The pulling wasn't that bad. When my dentist had to give me the shot in the roof of my mouth to numb it though it was the only time he said it would hurt. Hurt was an understatement.

Wow. You're the only other person I've ever known that didn't have wisdom teeth. You suppose this means you and I are more evolved than the rest of this riffraff?;)

I had one pulled about six months ago. It ached for about 18 hours and seeped for about 24 hours. I am sure your dentist will give you something for any discomfort you might experience.

Having teeth pulled is probably my biggest fear, no joking. I will not accept anything less than getting TOTALLY KNOCKED OUT! I refuse to be awake for the procedure, and here's hoping I never have to have one.

Almost everyone I know loathes going to the dentist, so why can't they figure out a damn way to make it painless 100% of the time!! :|
