I'm just going on what I overheard on the many visits to my oral surgeon....
Ok, Dentists are general purpose types, they handle cleanings, and simple extractions.
Oral Surgeons are specifically trained for under the gum work. From what I understood, when they took mine out, they had to peel back the gums, as well as another layer under the gums right before the actual bone. I believe it was called the periodontal(sp?) layer. Dentists don't go that deep into the gums and deal with the jaw bone itself.
Now, as for my extraction...I thought everything went well, but about 3 months later, I came back with some bad swelling and pain on the right side. Unfortunately, the tissue wasn't healing right, and something must have been stirring up down under the gums. The oral surgeon probably didn't flush out the extraction area real well with salt water, so some bone dust, or chips might have been stuck underneath that periodontal(sp?) layer. I had to go back in for some exploratory surgery, except this time they didn't put me to sleep and I felt everything they did. Lemme tell you, let them knock you out, you don't need to know what they're doing to your jaw..... ::shudder:: Just make sure your oral surgeon knows what he's doing and everything should go fine. Pain isn't that bad, all I took was Ibuprofen(sure it was 800mg pills, but who's counting?), and ate lots of soup.
