Wisdom Teeth Removed...

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out in 8 hours. Not happy about it. Don't ask for pics. You won't get any.

What would you guys do if you had to get your wisdom teeth out? Spring break for me. Probably just wind up lying around all day for a few days. This sounds boring.

I guess I'm just whining. Have you guys had your WT's out? Stories?

eww...
u better take care of it and not get it infected like i did...
ur cheeks swell up and u really look funny but it hurts like a )@#*%&YT)*#^%)(@^#!!! if u know what i mean.

so brush ur teeth even tho it may hurt...

My spring break was last week and last Monday (3/11) I had all 4 of mine taken out. 2 were impacted and there wasn't enough room for the other 2, so they came out too. Maybe I was just lucky, but it wasn't really that bad for me. I didn't need the pain killers after Monday (I did use ibuprofen though) and I didn't really have much swelling. I was up and around a little on Monday night, but on Tuesday I could pretty much do anything I wanted to (except for eating food that wasn't soft). I even felt well enough to fly out to Boston on Wednesday to visit a friend for a few days. It turned out much better than I expected, so it might not be too bad for you as well. I highly recommend having ice packs on your jaw for those first 2 days (30 min on, 30 off) whenever you're awake. Hopefully things will work out for you as well as they did for me. Good luck.

I've talked to people from both ends of the spectrum. A long time ago a friend had his out and he was miserable for days. But then I've talked to people who've had them out and gone back to work/school the same or next day. Guess it just depends on how good the person who does it is. Personally, I'd try and get an oral surgeon to do it, not just a dentist.

Don't worry. I had mine pulled out and within 3 days, I was eating a hamburger only becuase my mom wouldn't let me eat one 1-2 days after they were pulled.

Your gonna be knocked out from the gas, so you shouldn't feel any pain.

edit: actually, I think it's just a mindset...I mean, how can it hurt AFTER they are pulled? It may feel irritating for couple hours since you have four holes in your mouth, but otherwise, you should be fine. Good luck

dont worry, i got mine taking out a while ago. i didnt even need to take any medication after i got it pulled out. hopefully you get a doc who knows what he is doing, and does a excellent job. most ppl who hurt the next couple of days get quack doc's who dont know what the hell they're doing. if your mouth doesnt hurt, your doc did a good job.

you'll be loaded on pain killers anyways, if it hurts, so good luck.

I'm not exactly sure myself, but my guess is that an oral surgeon should be better at certain procedures, like extractions, because they focus on them. While a dentist might be able to do it, I would imagine that a dentist doesn't do these procedures as often as oral surgeons, making the oral surgeon a better choice. I'm sure there are exceptions, but this is how I thought about it.

Don't eat hot foods afterwards and take pain killers if you need to. Don't attempt to brush your teeth for the first couple of days or so. Slow rinsing here and there won't hurt. I had all 4 of mine taken out at once and it took around half a week for the pain to settle. It's not that bad actually.

Don't get the gas, go for the IV and have them completely knock you out. When I had mine removed I chose the gas + a local. The lady cut me off after 5 shots in the gums and I was still in terrible pain. I would take the IV in a second if the chance came back.

I'm just going on what I overheard on the many visits to my oral surgeon....

Ok, Dentists are general purpose types, they handle cleanings, and simple extractions.

Oral Surgeons are specifically trained for under the gum work. From what I understood, when they took mine out, they had to peel back the gums, as well as another layer under the gums right before the actual bone. I believe it was called the periodontal(sp?) layer. Dentists don't go that deep into the gums and deal with the jaw bone itself.

Now, as for my extraction...I thought everything went well, but about 3 months later, I came back with some bad swelling and pain on the right side. Unfortunately, the tissue wasn't healing right, and something must have been stirring up down under the gums. The oral surgeon probably didn't flush out the extraction area real well with salt water, so some bone dust, or chips might have been stuck underneath that periodontal(sp?) layer. I had to go back in for some exploratory surgery, except this time they didn't put me to sleep and I felt everything they did. Lemme tell you, let them knock you out, you don't need to know what they're doing to your jaw..... ::shudder:: Just make sure your oral surgeon knows what he's doing and everything should go fine. Pain isn't that bad, all I took was Ibuprofen(sure it was 800mg pills, but who's counting?), and ate lots of soup.

Trust me, as soon as she pulls out that knife the nitrous wears off

worst experiance of my life... must have been a bad day for the surgeon or something because I couldn't do ANYTHING for a week. It still hurt to eat solid food after a week. terrible...

I don't know what the other guys are talking about, but I would say to go for the gas. It was pretty cool.. You'll be awake for the whole thing, but it won't hurt, you'll actually be pretty happy about it. 😉

Maybe the other guys didn't get enough gas. Ask for a little extra!

As for after the surgery, I never really had any major pain, just a lot of bleeding. I think they prescribed me Oxycocet (sp?) for the pain, they worked well 🙂

<<why would a dentist be different from an oral surgeon?>>

Same reason a neurologist is different from a plastic surgeon.
It's called specializing.

Would you have Jiffy Lube rebuild your transmission or the dealer? Hey, they're all mechanics.

Actually, since I'm in Colorado Springs over spring break, they refused to use the gas. The only way they do wisdomectomies around here is by "lethal injection," I mean... the IV. Which basically amounted to me looking at the IV, saying "ok... here we go..." and not remembering anything until an hour later when it was time to go home.

Other than that, not much pain at all. Got these really cool narcotics and ibuprofen, and it was done by an oral surgeon. All I can say is... that IV takes you out extremely fast.

All in all, I'd say my orthodontist work was more painful than the wisdom teeth. So far anyway.
