wisdom teeth out tomorrow

so, how bad is this gonna be? im also taking care of a friends dog tomorrow as well as the next couple days, am i gonna have a problem with going over to his house and giving him water and food? for some reason im not too worried about it, partially because i have other things going on, but just because im a little out of it today.

so, any advice or experiences?
 
Well, when I had mine out, they had to cut into the jawbones to get them out, so I had a little bit longer recovery time. Since it was close to ten years ago now, my memories are a little vague. I remember my jaw being sore as hell. They put me completely under during the surgery as well, which pretty much obliterated my memories from the morning of the surgery. Literally, I remember going to bed the night before and then waking up in the orthodontists office.

But I'll sum it up for you.

You go in. You sit in the chair.
They knock you out.
You wake up a half hour later not knowing wtf just happened.
You go home.
Your mouth hurts for 4-5 days and you eat soft foods.
Your stitches dissolve, the pain goes away, you eat normally.

Some people's cheeks swell up a lot, some don't. Mine didn't. Don't take too much of whatever painkiller they give you.
 
ya, just as i was writing this i remembered a thread a long time ago, but because im an idiot, i posted anyways. fortunately, posting doesnt cause global warming....as far as we know.
 
Oh, btw, the stitches are made out of pig intestines, which is why they dissolve. and the experience differs from person to person. They're called wisdom teeth because they "have a mind of their own" and the same thing applies to extraction.
 
I had all 4 removed 2 years ago. I really thought it would be better than it was..

You will be given a prescription for pain medication. FILL THIS OUT IMMEDIATELY! I can't stress enough how important it is to get that medication in you as soon as you can.

You will probably sleep 15 hours a day for the next 3 days..

ICE PACKS!!! KEEP ICE PACKS ON YOUR CHEEKS AT ALLLLL TIMES! Swelling will make you miserable..

Keep the medicine flowing.. don't wait too long between dosages the first couple of days.

Stick to soft foods. Mashed potatoes, chicken noodle soup and beef / chicken broth will be staple foods for a week minumum. Try pudding or yogurt for a sweet change (but make sure its not too cold)

When you go for your post op checkup, get a special curved plastic syringe that you can fill with a diluted Listerine mixture. Push the liquid into the holes after every meal, you'll be amazed at how much crap collects in there and you dont want it to stay there.

Lastly, after the week or so of recovery you're jaws become pretty sore.. Start again slowly.. I tried a simple hamburger. Getting my mouth open enough to bite into it almost brought tears... Again, don't push it.

Lastly, you may have trouble walking to the dog when your on the pain meds (most likely high dosage Hydrocodone). You are going to be dizzy as hell, additionally, you are REALLY not going to feel like getting up..

I thought they were made from cow and sheep intestines.

Yeah, the dissolving stitches are organic and usually come from animal intestines. They're sterile, of course.

I think some orthos use non-dissolving stitches usually made of polyester, or silk or nylon. That just means you'll have to come back in to have them removed.
 
OP, are they going to knock you out? Please say yes. If yours are impacted you'll be looking at about three days at home in pain. My top two were fine, the bottom ones had to be chiseled from my jaw. I hope you have a ride home as well.

Knock you out 😵 They just twighlighted me and my brother... You know everything that's going on. They just give you some laughing gas for a little bit, give you an IV of the anesthetic, and finally give a local anesthetic to the jaw area and get to work.

They cover up your eyes and face except for just a slit so you can see (They hand a birdfeeder outside the window in mine 😛)

I didn't feel a thing. Just really calm. (I'm 6'1" at the time and a little 5'3" maybe nurse came in to go sit me down in a recovery room... I almost squashed her 😛)

2 years ago i had my broken arm rebroken without numbing or an IV by two guys yanking on it. unfortunately, they couldnt get it straight enough, so the next day i came in and they put me to sleep and redid it, because i guess my muscles were resisting too much when i was awake.....i dont think im a pussy. besides, i didnt say i was scared, i just wanted to know what to expect.

Okay. Then expect them to remove your wisdom teeth...a bit of a sore jaw...and some soft food. Common sense would tell you that. I had mine out and didn't come in here wondering what to expect...because common sense told me what to expect. And my common sense was right. My jaw was a bit sore...i ate some soft food...and life went on.
 
im not driving.

also, im pretty sure theyre gonna knock me out. however, when i was given anesthetic for my arm, they called me a day or two before to get my weight so they knew the strength or dose. they didnt do that this time, so that concerns me a little. then again, that was a different place that did different things, so maybe they dont call ahead.

I was knocked out, and they never asked me my weight beforehand.

You shouldn't have a problem.

Don't drive, obviously, that shouldn't need to be said. You'll be recovering from whatever sedatatives they use.

PLEASE do not overdose on your painkillers, especially if it's vicodin. You don't want to be vomitting after surgery, you can only open your mouth so far without pain. Trust me, as much as it might hurt, don't over do it on your painkillers.
 
Here's the flip side.

I've had mine out. Doc just deadened the area, pulled the teeth and put gauze in my mouth to soak up the blood.

Gave me a prescription for penicillin. Told me how to rinse out my mouth with salt water. Also told me to eat lots of soup with a milk base, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc.

Please note that I wasn't put out and had no sedatives.

Nah, they gave him penicillin, must've been around 1930. I'm sure the tools were made of wood, or some rudimentary alloy.
 
My friend's brother had them out. I just remember him walking around moaning in pain with gause in his mouth.
 
Stock up on fruit juices, apple and prune to be specific. Pain meds with hydrocodone or oxycodone
will constipate you like brick mortar. Juices also have a high nutritional (vit.c) and your body will put
these to good use in healing..
 
well, i got those puppies out this morning. they tried to put me to sleep, but i guess they gave me the highest dose before it got to dangerous, and i still wouldnt go to sleep. therefore, i did it with just a local anesthetic and some laughing gas. its weird cuz i remember seeing a buncha guys above my head and i kept asking them when it was gonna be done. i also remember thinking/telling them that i would sue the shit out of them if i felt any pain. (because i had no idea i wasnt put to sleep, not until it was all over with. so i thought it was something out of a stephen king book where the guy feels all the pain but is paralyzed and cant say anything)

in the end, probably because i wasnt put to sleep, i was good to go right when i got home. no dreariness or dizziness. the only thing is that i seem to have a loss of short term memory, which will hopefully fade by the morn and is probably a result of the medicine. no real pain, i have yet to take any Loracet...which is stronger than vicoden, because apparently vicoden isnt strong enough for me....maybe i shoulda told them that when i broke my arm and the vicoden wasnt doing the job. thanks for the insight guys
