Wisdom teeth advice

My girlfriend is having her wisdom teeth removed in about ten days. Unfortunately it sounds like the procedure will be a bit more complex than normal (teeth are impacted, has to see an oral surgeon) so recovery will not be fun. Other than the usual advice about having lots of soft food, ibuprofen and ice packs what else should I do to help out? I already told her to ask the oral surgeon to call in the painkiller prescription the night beforehand so it'll be available as soon as she leaves after the procedure. Any other suggestions from those who've been through this?

I had my wisdom teeth removed about 2 years ago, I went to a maxillofacial surgeon recommended by a coworker. He did such an amazing job that afterwards I had no pain whatsoever and was able to eat soup and pasta the same night, and was back to normal in 2 days.

Just follow the advice of the surgeon about using hot/cold packs and have some books to read and movies to watch. Good luck.

I had mine removed this year...it really isn't that bad, and they had to cut mine out and such too. I'm a big guy, so not sure if that impacted it, but the pain pills didn't really work for me. The stitches got to me, and I think I ended up cutting them out a bit early, but I was fine.

Mine were impacted, and I had a hard time of things. I ended up swallowing a lot of blood and that, coupled with the stuff they used to knock me out made me sick as a dog.

It sounds like you've already planned for everything. Don't worry, she'll be fine in a few days. 🙂

Kinda sucks, sometimes it keeps bleeding slightly nonstop and its gross.

Not really painful.

i was only born with two. they got decayed because i couldn't reach far enough with my toothbrush. no impaction. they removed them a couple months ago. i felt pain the night that i had it done, but the next day, i was completely fine. the only annoying thing was changing my diet to all soft foods (killed my healthy diet because i only ate ice cream and milkshakes and such). my suture site ended up dying and not healing right, so i ended up with open sockets (not dry sockets, though). i had to make sure to rinse my mouth out after every meal and to be mindful of what i ate. kind of annoying.

My wisdom teeth put up a fight when my dentist tried to pull them out. In his 20 years of being a dentist, he had never such a difficult time getting teeth out. My teeth weren't impacted but the roots were claw-like and held on for dear life. He had all of his employees stop what they were doing on the other 5-6 patients in the office to gather around and assist him. In the end, he had to saw the teeth in portions and pull sections out. He decided to pull the top and bottom wisdom teeth of one side during this visit (mainly because he didn't have the strength to take the others out). Also, this would allow me to chew on the other side of my mouth during the healing process. I came back a couple weeks later and had the other 2 removed.

He gave me some painkillers. I actually felt no pain during and after the procedure. I was able the save the meds for a rainy day. ^_^

mine were the same way... she had to break the roots of the tooth off and then go scraping to detach the root pieces. it was horrible the scraping sensation even though my mouth was numb and to feel and hear the sound.

felt some soreness that night when the anesthetic wore off, but the next day i was totally fine.

I just had 2 of mine removed and it was quite easy with no pain during the procedure or after. Don't make the same mistake I made. I thought that one of my teeth was impacted and started reading all sorts of horrific things on the internet. BIG mistake. I had myself so freaked out it was ridiculous. I had nitrous which helped a great deal! Dry socket is a possibilty, but it's really quite rare (5% of people get it, and it's the ones that don't follow the "rules"!). If you follow the "rules" that they give you after extractions, you'll be fine. The two biggies are don't drink from a straw and don't smoke. You also don't want to rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for the first 24 hours.

I had the wisdom teeth and the four adjacent molars out all at the same time. They knocked me out. I had a good surgeon and didn't have much pain, but I did look like a zombie for a couple days with blood all over my mouth.

Anyway, painkillers, milkshakes, and some entertaining distractions are all she'll need.

No straws and no smoking are the two big ones that I remember when I had them out a few summers ago.

Far as pain goes it wasn't too bad at all, nothing a little aspirin didn't cure in my case. Operation on a Friday, spent the weekend taking it easy and playing video games and back to work on Monday.
