It's been a long spiral downward for my state for the past couple of decades. But I think we're starting to turn around. The last midterm election winning Justice Protasiewicz her seat was a HUGE pivot point.

Reason I think we should have an equal number of justices equal number from both sides.

This would start forcing decisions based on facts. With those egos they won't want a bunch of undecided cases.

Can't stress enough how big a deal this is - Wisconsin in its current state is essentially not a democracy as it is functionally impossible for Democrats to win a legislative majority. (at one point I think it was at the level where Democrats had to win by about 20 points to get a one seat majority)

Removing those maps and replacing them with sane ones would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

The ONLY reason Wisconsin isn't beating you is because we have a democrat for a governor who does what he can to keep the GOP nutjob legislature in check. We only have a D governor becuase that vote is state-wide totals and cities like Milwaukee, Madison etc came out in droves last election as we knew were had no chance at the legislature due to the horrible maps we have to overcome. Jeebus willing this new lawsuit, coupled with the new justice will fix things.

Not recusing herself from redistricting issues based on statements she made during the campaign.

Which of course is:

1) Not one of the grounds for impeachment listed in the Wisconsin Constitution.
2) A violation of the 1st amendment.
3) Something Republican justices on the same court have done routinely.

If they succeed in blocking her from ruling on the case there is no longer any viable path forward in Wisconsin for democracy absent some sort of federal intervention. The most likely path for that would be that the federal courts would rule this as a violation of her 1st amendment rights as they have previously held in similar situations. Then again, it's Calvinball time at SCOTUS so who knows.

It gets worse. From what I understand, if the assembly passes their impeachment with a simple majority, she is removed from her duties immediately. If she is impeached by the senate, a replacement is appointed by the governor.

So naturally the plan will be for the assembly to pass their simple majority, and for the senate to not take up the impeachment proceedings, ensuring 3-3 split between conservatives and liberal justices.

Democracy is pretty much dead in WI outside of statewide elections, and Republicans are doing what they can on that front as well.
