Wisconsin Senate Passes Union Reform Legislation

In a bold gambit to put an end to the weeks-long budget standoff in Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker (R) is reportedly splitting his controversial budget-repair bill in two, with the goal of passing the more hotly contested provisions even with 14 key Democratic state senators holed up in Illinois.

The news, first reported by local press, would allow the anti-collective bargaining measure to pass with just Republican support. Under Wisconsin law a 3/5s quorum is needed for a statute that is fiscal in nature. No such quorum is needed for non-fiscal matters.

Walker tried to compromise with the Democrats and they wanted no part of it.
Its good to see Walker call the Democrats bluff.

Good news as I feared he may have backed down. The line is drawn in the sand. As goes Wisconsin, so goes the nation.

It's going to be an all out free for all outside the capitol.

Just heard the bill passed. They didn't wait until tomorrow.

Edit: Typing at the same time.

This is freakin' hilarious. Hey, turns out we didn't need you guys after all. Sorry about that, enjoy yourselves down there as long as you want. We'll strip collective bargaining for goodies from state employees, then I'll lay off enough of them to balance the budget. But feel free to continue paying them to march and chant and beat drums, we know how you guys love that.

While I'm in agreement with you, I'm not sure the best course of action is going to be rubbing their noses in it - on a national level that is. I shit you not when I say I would not be surprised to see some violent outcomes based on these actions by the Wisconsin legislature.

On one hand it would show the left to be the violent bunch that they sometimes tend to be, albeit it would be mostly ignorant college kids with union goons thrown in to fuel the fires. On the other hand the country is divided enough as it is. We don't need to start picking out uniforms and fighting our kin. Yes, exaggeration, I know.

This has the potential to be a very serious situation.

Unions have their place, teachers in my home state were pretty much the lowliest of workers as far as government jobs go until they organized and went on strike a little over twenty years ago. Things got much better for them, but the union faded away once the conditions improved and the government did not try to roll any changes back.

Not sure what the situation is like in Wisconsin, but if they are coming down this hard on the unions, then I suspect they have grown too powerful and greedy, which is bad for everyone (even the teachers in the long run).

This is why you never give them an inch. Never. Not one inch.

Ironic that the Republican State Senators passed this bill through the Senate chamber with the votes saying they are able to do it because its not a fiscal issue.

😀

Thanks for confirming what we knew all along.

Perhaps not, but when the Democrats refuse to play except by their rules, you are left with either pretending the Democrats won the election, or this.

Sounds like a sensible thing for a union, to get strong when needed and to fade into the background when not needed.

I've been wondering for a while why they didn't just go around the "spending" issue and do this instead. Wonder what will happen now with the other issues.

No, I hear ya - the Republicans won. The Dem's backed them into a corner and I'm glad they found a way out. It's high time we started standing up to them. On a national level their opinions and beliefs are the minority opinion. In light of that, it's way past the time for them to "assume the position". What goes around, comes around. I hope this emboldens other states and municipalities.

Well at least they went ahead and confirmed what I suspected, the provisions were not fiscal and all about union busting.
Right, 'cause government's money comes from a Magic Cupboard and therefore benefits negotiated by unions have no fiscal impact on government.

Read into it however you like. The fact remains:

1. It passed.
2. It is NOT Fiscal by itself.
3. The reason it is needed is it has a HUGE Fiscal impact.

It Passed.

I love the "anti middle class" argument being put forth by CNN right now.

If the median house hold income in the United States is $46,326 and an individual member of these unions make more than that, they are clearly not in the middle class.

Go Walker! Use the force for good to defeat the democrats on the dark side of the force, for they are aligned with tyranny and marxism. Defeat them before their debt star destroys us all.

LOL - According to MSNBC, Walker is now the front runner for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

Can't make this stuff up.

Logic is not your strong suit.

Granted, CNN can be prats, but the middle class encompasses something above the median income. A single earner family, or one with a low second earner, could earn considerably more than that and still be a middle class family.

As GOP told us during tax cut debates, even over $250K household income is middle class.
