WIRELESS cuts my FIOS speed by nearly 50%! :(

What can I do?

I'm upstairs, the FIOS router (Actiontech) is downstiairs. I have a Linksys-G USB adapter and I'm getting 2 problems

1) The download speed is ~6000-7000kbps here, but hardwired it's ~14500-15000.
2) There's a little half-second to one second lag when I go to a site. It's almost as if it doesn't respond for that period of time (the site just doesn't load).

Any tips? There's some crazy advanced settings in the router config screen that I'm not sure how to configure...

1. use a wire
2. try a different wireless router/adapter (change the adapter first)

are you using WEP? (that has been known to slow down fast transfers IIRC because of encryption and decryption times....but this could be complete bullsh!t :p)

Also, couldn't hurt to keep some standards (ie: same router/adapter brand)

finnaly....if you are paying for FIOS you might as well pay to run some gigabit networking cable throuh your heating ducts to your computer... :p

Have you tried changing the channel? This helps me sometimes when I'm getting poor results on my laptop.

Quit complaining, you speed freak! :p

Actually, maybe FiOS is reason enough to upgrade to a good Pre-N or Draft-N MIMO wireless setup--you can get kits that include the MIMO router and adapter (not sure if its USB or CardBus/ExpressCard.)

i want Fiber! ...my recommations is to turn off all secuirty and ask your neigbor to test your speeds, and see if he complains about speeds. I know your paying for 15mb, but its kind of hard since Verz. is installing it everywhere.

Please don't do this. :( Draft-N is a channel hog and makes life even more miserable for the rest of us.

802.11g is more than fast enough for his purposes. I expect that he simply has crappy antennas or there is too much interference in his house. And lastly, keep in mind that it is wireless. It's going to suffer compared to wire, that's just how life is.

Before I decide to go wired... What about some tweaking utilities? DrTCP? http://dslreports.com/drtcp

You didn't answer my question... how can you expect troubleshooting help when you provide little to no information and ignore the questions people pose to you to assist you?

Could the problem be the USB adapter USB 1.1 is pretty slow. I'm not sure if USB 2.0 is up to speed. Invite a friend over with a laptop with built in wireless to test.

dont use the actiontec...it is crap. I switched it w/ a WRT54G running a linux firmware, get the full 15/2, and the router is downstairs/other side of the house.

Just get the MAC address of the actiontec, and have the new router clone it. I am running a cheap airlink USB 802.11g card...so if that can get max speeds, any card should be able to.

(I am running 64bit WEP btw)

You are using a USB adapter!

Get a real adapter and your speeds should increase. USB and networking were never supposed to be combined.

which means absolutely nothing.....

Currently, I have achieved about 30MB/s of sustained transfers over usb 2.0 which realistically, is about 3x as fast.

You know G is 54mbps right? That's about 7megabytes per second, which is the speed you're getting. Why hasn't anyone posted this yet??

He's getting 7000Kbps...

7000 Kbps = 0.854492188 megabytes / second

Because it is wrong. His Fios is 15Mbps. Wireless G is 54Mbps.
