#3 probably, but really depends on what software you use. By "c4" do you mean mobile Celeron? The Netburst architecture supposedly really likes memory bandwidth. Whether it can make up for a 200MHz deficit depends on what you run. Encoding and other CPU intensive stuff probably likes more MHz while some other stuff will like more RAM speed. I'd do it just for the 2x overclock. 😀
 
Hey guys I have an SL725 P4 mobile as you are saying about the cele multiplier is locked at 12 although Rm utility sees the startup mutiplier as 21 it runs @ 133x12 or 1.6 is the pinout on this chip the same as the cele 478 is there a mod either software or hardware I can do to get it to run at 133x21=2.8
 
AFAIK nobody has been able to override the SpeedStep low multiplier problem on desktop boards. The only way to get the CPU to run faster is to clock the FSB higher. At the "standard" 800MHz FSB that many boards are capable of, the CPU runs at 2.4GHz. Many good overclocking boards using the 865PE or 875P chipset can push the CPU to 3GHz at 250MHz FSB. Note that higher FSB will give you higher RAM speeds (if your memory is decent) and thus higher performance. 12x233 will outperform 21x133 at the same 2.8GHz.

If your board can't do that high, then there's nothing that will help.
 
Zap ,Thanks for the quick reply ,the board I have is Soyo does allow cpu freq adjustments in bios between 100 and 255 but according to soyo only supports 533 fsb with the latest bios,I have pc 2100 ram I could get newer ram if it would help ,I'm confused about the ram speeds still.Could I move it up with this config or would the ram be to slow??? also if I wanted to try the pin mod would it work on this chip ???Is it the same pin or pins as the diagram at the start of the thread???? can you coat it with polish or do you have to bend it ??? can you modify the socket ??? I'm debating how much more time money I want to put into this board cpu combo,I have never really tried Overclocking before,so I'm just trying nothing critical,the board came with a p4 1.8 desktop chip can that be boosted??? the multiplier is not locked in it,according to soyo max support 533/2.8 thats why I bought the chip,but also has all overclocking options in the bios,ANY INFO FROM ANYONE IS SINCERELY APPRECIATED, THANKYOU SO MUCH ZAP FOR YOUR TIME AND TROUBLE

Yes, you can use nail polish instead of bending/breaking the pins. I've tried it and didn't have much success but I know other people use it with success.

You'll have to reduce the RAM speed to keep your RAM working.

Soyo sy p4s dragon SIS645 chipset according to the manual supports DDR 2700 if If got 2700 ram instead of 2100 would it mke a big diff ??? Thanks for the welcome and for all the help!!! Do you have to do all the pins in the diagram or just that one bsel the one five over and three up???
 
I could be wrong, but I don't think that chipset supports an AGP lock, so you'd be limited to about 140-150MHz FSB in BIOS.
 
I Was reading about the pin mods so if it is already posting at 133x12 what if anything will the pin mod do??,If I can lock the AGP is that to be able to further increase the FSB???Sorry for all the questions Thanks Again All replys or suggestions are appreciated,Any way to enable speed step on a desktop board for a mobile chip??
 
AFAIK no way to change Speedstep multiplier.

If the AGP can be locked, then you can arbitrarily set to any FSB your CPU and motherboard can handle without causing AGP problems.

There are two pin mods, one is for changing voltage and the other is for setting FSB. They are important in some occasions when there are some compatibility issues or for overclocking on otherwise non-overclockable motherboards.

I've got a Foxconn with 865PE on the way. Per the website, overclocking features include adjustable memory timings and ratios. Logically this means it should have pretty decent FSB increment, but only time will tell. Looking to add a mobile P4 1.6 or 1.7 whichever turns out cheaper. But did someone state the lower-clock mP4's don't like to go to 250+ FSB?

Gonna use DDR400 memory and am having a brain fart. This means the ratio ought to be 1:1 to start and then if I achieve 250 FSB maybe take it down to 5:4? Or should it be 1:2 to start since the cpu's default FSB is 100? Also, do I necessarily go into BIOS to attain 200 FSB on the mP4, or is there an easy pin mod like for celly? *scratching head; loooong thread*

The board is dual channel and SATA capable as well. Not bad for 20 bones
 
I have a Mobile P4 M cpu which I have broken th BSEL1 Pin on. I tested the CPU before breaking the pin but now it will not post at all

My setup:
Asus P4GPL-X Motherboard
Latest bios installed
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - M 2200/512 SL6VB

Have got some responds from one of my friends, what do you say about it?

"I think you have to break the BSEL0 pin, NOT the BSEL1 pin. BSEL1 is for 200fsb, BSEL0 is for 133fsb."

He I broke both the BSEL1 and BSEL0 pins, and it wouldn't post.

Help is very welcome.. 🙂
 
I had a 1.5GHz mobile P4 that wouldn't run past about 2.5GHz using the "detected" 1.6v. I think it was a B0 core. The others I played with were C1 core and most would do around 2.8-3GHz.

You had tested the CPU in that exact board before breaking off both pins and it worked? You can try reconnecting the pins by getting a small wire (one strand from some fine stranded wire like phone or network), about 6-8mm worth, bending it in half and dropping it (ends first) into the BSEL0 hole, then doing another one for BSEL1. You should then see the top bent part of the wire sticking out of the hole. Think of your socket now as a hybrid with those two pins similar to how socket 775 works. I've done that to a CPU and it worked. BTW Google still has a cached version of "Zap's FSB pin mod" page even though it's been offline for ages now, since probably September.
 
Hello Zap. Thanks for your reply. I think that you have misunderstood me. I have only broken the BSEL1 pin, not the BSEL0 pin.

The question is, if Ihave done the right thing or not?

I tried the CPU on the same board that I didn't run on later on.

I may seem like the only solution to reconnecting it with a wire to see if it still works.
 
I just found a cheap HSF that may work well with the mobile chips...

This is the effective mounting surface of the heatsink. A folding handle/ clamp sits atop the heatsink assembly.

I ve got a Mega PC 651 with an 1,7 Ghz mobile Pentium IV-M in it. Without modding the CPU it runs on 1,5 volt, and 12*100 MHz. I made the "bent pint trick" to make it work on a lower voltige, to generate less heat and to be quiter. Now it works fine at 1,1 (1,08-1,09) volt. The 1,7 GHz mobile processor rated voltage is 1,3 volt, but it works fine at 1,2 Ghz with 1,1 volt too, and generates very little heat. In this way the cpu cooler works only when the CPU it is on hevy load (for example, when I use Power DVD). At this voltage, I can even overclock the CPU to 1440 MHZ, but 1,2 ghz it is fine for DVDs and internet browsing. I even tried the 133 fsb trick, isolating the Pin AD6 with nail polish, and it works fine at 1,48 volt and 1596 Mhz, and overclocked even at 1,7 ghz (142 Mhz fsb).
BUT, I have got a problem.
The Mega PCs CPU FAN turns on regularily only when the CPU heats up to 45 C. When I turn on the Mega PC, the heatsink turns on for 2 or 3 seconds, then stops until the CPU riches 45 C, after hevy CPU load. My problem is that, after working on Mega Pc, with the fan running very rarely, sometimes after I turn off my PC and some other times turning it on again, the CPU fan starts to run constantly at high speed, and never wants to stop. The Speedfan program and Fuzzy Logic, reports high temperatures 53-60 C, instead of 21-22 what it shows normally (they are incorect, the cooler is not hot, not even the CPU), I dont know why.
Could you help me to find out why it is happening so. Speedfan ver. 4.28 reports at Fan1 and Fan2 high temperatures. The CPU seems to be at low temperatures. Inspite of this the FAN runs constantly at 3,800 rpm. The Bios also reports low CPU and motherboard heat. Fuzzy Logic overclocking program also reports high temperatures right after I start my PC. I have to restart my PC, after it starts to run normally.
I can find out why is this happening. Please help me if you can!!!
 
Two things come to mind right now. First is that after the CPU has heated up, when you shut it off it stays hot for a while since there is no longer any active cooling so if you turn it back on it is at the same temperature that it was, causing the fan to kick in. However, if you aren't doing anything strenuous then the high speed fan causes the CPU to cool down really quick.

The other thing is that perhaps you need a spacer between the CPU and heatsink, if the heatsink isn't making really tight contact with the CPU.
 
Well, actually at first I thought that the spacer was bad. I used the "floppy trick" 🙂 Then I thought the spacer is not enough, and changed it to an aluminium heatspreader (it is about 3 mm thick as the desktop processor's) and I used silver thermal paste, but the fan it still "plays" with me. I guess it cant be the heatspreder, the contact now it is very good. And the cpu it is not hot. After a hevy use I took out the CPU to see if it is hot or not.
The 2-3 seconds running of the fan, it is normal at booting. The fan stoped even when I used the desktop Celeron processor, after the first 2 seconds after booting the bios. I observed that the unnormal fan comportment occures, not after I stop the PC and restart it (when the CPU can be - as you said - hot) but after a long period of time, for example the next day when I start the PC again. In this case, the fan does not stops after 2-3 seconds, but it runs in a higher speed then it runs normally at hevy use. (It has I guess 3 levels: the first level at 6 volts - 2400 rpm, II. - let say 9 volts, at 3400 rpm, and the III. level, at 12 volt - 4000 rpm - these figures are only a rough estimates) With mobile cpu the fan never runs at the II. level. So the problem is, that sometimes (I guess when I look at DVDs, and the CPU fan has to turn on and run for a few minutes) the second day when I turn on my PC, the CPU fan does not wants to stop after booting (as I said before it is normally stops after 2 or 3 seconds), but it runs at a higher speed (I guess the II. level). Forgive me that I write so long, but I am a hungarian guy, and my english is not good enough. Hoping that you can help me, I am trying to describe the problem as good as I can. I am asking you, becouse I think that the cause of the problem is the mobile CPU (I have tested, with the desktop Celeron I have never had such problems). Maybe the volt is too low (1,08 volt) and makes the CPU heat sensor not to function properly (it's rated voltage is 1,3 volt) or anything else... Have you any idea?

Hey Guys, been a while.

I am still living Down Under (Sydney) but am still playing with the odd Mobicel.

I paired a D1 stepping Mobile Celeron 2000mhz with Asrock P4i45GV as seen here:

It defaults to 1.7v, has a PCI/AGP lock (newest bios only) and has 1-mhz increment FSB adjustments. The CPU is runnig stable and cool at 3333mhz with a stock Intel Cooler (only about 4-5c higher than case temps).

It runs all the tests I have run on it (SuperPi, Prime95, etc...). The board has a 1:1 mem devider or a 4:3 so at 170fsb I can run either 218fsb on the ram or 170fsb which are each ideal for some PC3200 overclocking (to 217fsb) or mild PC2700 overclocking (to 170fsb) of course I managed to get 218 from an old stick of PC2100 (no idea how).

Anyways, might wanna add it to your list, would make a sweet HTPC setup.

Update on my mobile celeron 2.4 + Soyo Dragon i865PE...

I decided to try playing with overclocking it so I un-bent the Vid pin. Vid went up to 1.6V. I am able to get it up to 2.88GHz (120FSB) but it crashes at anything faster. I WAS hoping to get it up to at least 3.0GHz, like my other mobile celeron 2.2 did, so I'm a bit disappointed. Unfortunately this motherboard doesn't have the ability to adust Vcore in the BIOS, so I can't up the voltage for more speed. Still... a 20% overclock is nothing to feel bad about.
 
Have a question for you guys.
I'm using a mobile celeron 1.6 on a biostar pt800

The sound craps above 107 fsb so I'm having to settle for stock speeds but that's ok this is a charity build.

My problem is that with the last software installs, warpspeeder - biostar overclocking program and a usb wireless card - motorola, I get the message during install that a device is not registered and the install fails.

I wondered if it was related to the intel chipset driver and tried to reinstall them and got the same message - device not registered.

What should be my next step.

BTW built a d1 stepping mobile celeron on an asus p4s800-mx refurb / left it alone at 3.2 gig with about 250-400mhz head room left for safety/stability sake. Worked like a charm.

The VIA PT800 chipset doesn't have an AGP/PCI lock (the PT880 does) so it only "works" propery at 100/133/200MHz FSB settings. In-between settings will cause things to fail.

As for the error message installing stuff, if it is a fresh Windows install perhaps you can just format/install again, making sure to install chipset drivers first and use newest driver downloads for peripherals.
 
Hi everyone,

Here is my recent experience with a P4-m 1.8Ghz, model SL6FH - Core C1.

Tested on Asus Pundit Barebone (first generation), aka "Pundit 1".
Specs: http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=84&l1=1&l2=3&l3=0
Motherboard model: Asus P4S8L - Chipset SiS 651
RAM used: 1 X 512Mo PC2700/DDR333 Infineon

The CPU cooler is specific to the Barebone (due to its compact size) and it doesn't reach the core, so I had to remove the 4 white spacers/stopers from the cooler support on the mobo.

The CPU is dectected normally at 1.64 Vcore.

The bios allows to choose between the follownig frequencies:
- Default: 1.2Ghz
- Automatic: 12x100 - 1.2Ghz
- Automatic: 12x133 - 1.6Ghz
- Manual: incrementation of bus frequencies by 1Mhz steps, from 100/33 to 166/33

The bios doesn't allow any Vcore settings 🙁

DDR Memory Bios Settings:
- Automatic
- 200
- 266
- 333
- 400
But the memory refuse to work fine at anything except "Auto" or "333".

I've tried the "pin bend" method to get Vcore at 1.2V
- Vcore is displayed in Red in the bios at 1.2V
- The Pc boots fine and runs at 12x100
- Tne CPU refuses to work at any frequency except 12x100

Without pin bending for Vcore mod, the CPU runs at 1.64V
- runs fine at 12x100 (automatic)
- runs fine at 12x133 (automatic)
- runs fine at 12x150 (manual bus frequency at 150/35 and memory set to Auto)
- above 150/35: BSOD involving memory problems and windows refuses to boot.

So the best I can get with this barebone is 1.8Ghz (12x150), any higher frenquencies leads to troubles with memory module (perhaps should I try with PC3200/DDR400 when I'll get one).
