I run XP on an old Gateway box, PIII 450MHz, 384MB SDRAM. I have the "classic theme" selected, none of the animation turned on. It actually runs ok. Its not fast enough for everday use, but as a secondary comp, it does just fine.

On my LT I had to go to a 'lighter overhead' Divx / Mpeg player.
BS player, but it plays regular DVD's just fine.

it will run fine. I'd get abit more ram though I just sold my dad a celerom 900 about a year ago with 256 MB of ram and he hasn't complained.

Winxp will have faster boot up times than win2k, all else being equal. Since that's your concern, I would choose winxp. Hardware specs are more than adequate for xp operation -- most certainly is NOT an 'old' computer.

I had Windows XP Pro running on a 500MHz 198MB PC before, ran just fine.

Have winXP on a p2 450mhz /w 256mb RAM at work and it runs quite well. Disabling unneccessary services (themes mostly) WILL improve performance considerably, but it should work pretty well without any changes at all.

My last system was based around a P3 700mhz chip. WinXP ran pretty well if I used the Windows Classic theme.

I kinda wish they had the old Windows 3.1 theme, but hey....

My school runs XP on 400MHz PIIs with usually 384MB of ram, and it can be quite abysmal. Switching between two windows of IE can take several seconds. Of course, switching to the classic theme and disabling useless applications would probably help.

Sounds like a dell on a overworked network.
