WinXP on an old computer

How well will Windows XP run on this computer?

Pentium III @ 933MHz
256-384MB PC133 RAM
20GB old hdd or newer 120GB 7200RPM hdd

I am most concerned about boot-up and shut-down time.
Should I opt for an older OS instead? I think that I'll avoid Linux for the time being.

Actually, it should run fine. It won't be blazing fast or anything, but XP would run without a problem. We've had 400Mhz PII's running XP just fine.

Don't expect incredible performance, but I don't think you'd have a problem at all.
 
You either have 256 or 384MB of RAM. Which one is it?

You can run a happy XP with 512MB of RAM. With 384MB, it will be OK. With 256MB, you will notice slow events.
 
If you increase the memory to 512MB or more, XP will run on OK that computer. You may not be able to run as much at the same time as newer computers, but XP will run OK.
You won't be able to run many of the newer games, but surfing the web, email, and office type applications, should run just fine.
 
you should be okay running windows xp on that setup. it won't be real peppy but it shouldn't be awful. windows 98 would be faster but it just depends on what you need.
 
its gonna run slower windows xp is gonna want 512mb and its not worth upgrading his rig to 512mb.
 
933 is more than enough. 256MB of RAM is the minimum I'd use, so you should be fine.

I have XP running on a P2 300 with 192MB and it runs good enough.
 
That computer is way overkill for WinXP.

For a couple years I ran WinXP without problem on a much slower computer with just 128 MB of memory.

If you are worried about boot-up, then just don't shut the thing off. 60 seconds or so isn't that big of a deal anyways.

lol my friends comp, ran it on a Celeron A 333Mhz, 128Mbs (2x64 sticks) of SD RAM, 4Gb HDD, and it ran ok ..

its the visuals themes from xp that will batter the comp, try using classic theme for better performance if you need it
 
Runs fine
Turn off all the eye candy!
I run it one a P3 LT with 256 mb of ram and SLOW HD.
Anything around a gig with at least 256 mb ram runs not too poorly
 
My brother in law had xp pro running on a k6-2 400mhz with 64 mb of memory and 8 gig drive. Dropping in another 128 mb roughly doubled how fast apps open though.
 
933MHz is plenty.
256MB is plenty.

Should run XP fine.

Wont be a bleeding edge gaming machine, but most things older than Doom3/HL2 should run alright.

Blah these guys are FULL of SH..

I Have XP running on a P3 @ 733 with 256mb PC133, it is one of the last P3 boards Made a DFI CA64-TC so has 4x AGP with a 9200 In it so might give my machine alil bit of a Lead

But XP runs Just fine Out of the Box on it, no need to turn off anything, tho disabling some of the non essential services gives it a boost (See PC Stats for a Quick Guide)

Startup is alil long tho I'd say 20 seconds give or take 1 or 2, shutdown always seems to take longer to me tho
 
I have Windows XP running on an old Pentium II 350MhZ with 128 megs of RAM, and honestly, it runs better than Windows 98 ever did.

I plan to use it as an entertainment PC in a spare room in the house, probably hooked up to a nice projector 😀

should squeak by all of that.
I think the minimum for smooth DIVX playing is like 600 or something, but I could be wrong.

should be fine for all of it !
 
It should be fine on that system. If I were going to put windows on it, it would probably be Win2000 Pro since I have that running on a laptop 400 celery with only 128megs and it runs very nice for what it's doing (less intensive than WinXP).
 
Should be fine. Do you have a decent Video Card to drive a projector? Really, you just need something with DVI or component out.
