I usually just use clickondetroit.com radar loops because it is local... there is another link in this thread to a large detailed radar image of the continental US...

Of course I also use the Environment Canada site but I doubt that would help you much ;)

Hard to say how much snow we've got since I got home because it's blowing and drifting so badly. I called my sister who had to drive to Dayton this morning for work - a 2 hour drive took her 4 hours. She said she's been in the car now for three hours and she's still an hour from home (in good conditions), so she's expecting another 3 hours in the car. 6 hours for a two hour drive. She's currently driving through a county with a Level 3 snow emergency, which means she could be arrested for even being on the roads and the roads are considered closed to non-emergency personnel. She had been stopped for about 30 minutes before traffic finally started moving again so I got off the phone with her.

I'm just chilling here in my apartment putting off work and watching the snow pile up.

Edit: Oh yeah, Blizzard Warning in effect for this whole corner of the state. That just means poor visibility and high winds for longer than 3 hours.

My folks called a bit ago, took my sister about two hours to get home from where she was when I talked to her. It's about an hour normally. She promptly got stuck in the driveway :).

It really doesn't look that bad where I'm at, but my townhouse is off the roads and sheltered pretty well, so it's hard to judge the drifting. It'd be pretty cool to be out where my folks live, there are lots of open fields so they usually get some MASSIVE drifts.

Well, if we get enough snow, I might actually have to get the shovel out. Western NY, and this *might* be the first time I have to shovel this year! I can't decide whether or not I should dance to the snow gods... On one hand, a snowday would be a welcome break. On the other hand, Friday is the last day of school for a week (February break); it would really screw up my lesson plans for the week.

They are saying there is the possibility of 24 inches by Wednesday!! And consider yourself lucky on the shoveling, I personally had to shovel several times when I was in Jamestown over winter break.

Yeah, but exaggerating the weather seems to increase the ratings of the weather shows/news with weather. Plus, they seem to prefer to err on that side.

"Who care's if we predict 10 inches and they only get 1 inch? They'll be happy. On the other hand, if we predict 1 inch, and they get 10 inches, they'll be mad at us. So, since we think they're going to get about 5 inches of snow on Wednesday, let's err on the side of caution and predict 2 feet. Besides, once we say '2 feet of snow...', our ratings are going to be sky high!"

Well update from my 12 hours in a trauma hospital....we have capacity for 120 patients and we had 15 when I left. Thankfully people decided to not be stupid tonight. At least to the extent that we weren't exactly busy in downtown Detroit. So left the hospital at 3am on the nose and it's a 26 mile drive and I just pulled into a parking spot at about 4:10am...not to mention i had to break out my emergency car shovel just to park cuz there was a snow drift over a foot high. The roads were horrible, they can't really make a dent in it, even with plowing. You can see where my university plowed the snow but it doesnt look like they've done anything because of the high winds and HUGE snow drifts. Freeways were like that too, at best it was 2 lanes, usually only 1. Couldnt see the lines, freeway totally covered with snow/icey sh!t. Thank God I drove home when the freeways were empty.

Good luck to all in the morning....

The roads aren't too bad, people are just being stupid. Either you have them trying to do 50mph or you have them petrified doing 10mph, hitting their brakes every 100 feet.

/me is working from home today

I didn't feel like challenging the unplowed roads with my mighty four inches of ground clearance on the Civic.

They upgraded our snow emergency to a Level 3 sometime in the night, I woke up this morning to see the university is closed for the day so I'm working from home again. It really doesn't look that bad out today. They've already plowed my parking lot and shoveled the sidewalks.

I could probably go out right now but I don't want to risk getting cited for it. When they downgrade us to a Level 2, I think everyone's going to start driving again and there will probably be a bunch more accidents, so I guess I'll just hang out here all day.
