I will probably buy it, but if there's any copy protection sh*t in it I'll definitely crack it.

Knowing Microsoft, I doubt their first release of XP will be as stable as 2000. They're introducing a lot of new (but useless) features into it, thus allowing for more bugs, crashes, and flaws. Though the NT Kernel is stable, Microsoft usually doesn't get everything right in the first shot. (ie: Windows 2000 - Lack of ATA/100 support, etc..)

I will probably pick up a copy being that I can get it legally for around $5-$10. It is nice to go to a university where they have a license agreement with M$. Right now any student can go and buy most of M$ productivty products for $5. This includes Win2k, 98se, ME, Visual Studio Professional, Office 2k Pro, and others. Too bad I can only buy one copy.

Not me.

The more traditional way stuff like this works is that the one getting screwed gets PAID for it, rather than the other way around.

I would buy it, but the behind-your-back checkup features and the HWID bother me. I feel like I'd be better off acquiring a corporate/oem version without all that junk. It's a pretty sad statement, but that's my thinking as of now. Also, system restore/pchealth and all the other "features" had better be permanently and comletely disabled this time, or at least an option for it.

It's funny how many of you are talking about DOS being the best OS that Microsoft ever produced. I don't think I'd know how to use it, let alone install it. You old timers... ;)

I think I'll be sticking to my Win2000. Seems pretty stable to me...

I'll use it! I've had every build thus far and it WILL be an improvement especially for anyone using 98/ME. I use 2k, ME, 98SE & XPbeta now and to be quite honest XP is right up there with 2K as it is right now, and blows any 9X product away! IMHO! ;)

DOS is a joke of an OS. I used to use DOS and I don't think that Win95 was much of an improvement...and Win3.11 definately wasn't. But to compare DOS to Windows NT is rather silly.

DOS and it's 640k of RAM, and it's stupid EMS and XMS managers to get above 1MB. Yay! If you just don't like GUIs get Linux, Linux is as powerful from command line as Windows NT is with all it's GUI glory. Of cousre admining Linux is a little harder from the command line, but it can be done. DOS was joke. I'm an old time DOS user and in it's day I loved it, certainly more than 3.11 but DOS was so full of limitations it makes me kinda sick.

Anyhow, I've more or less decided.
Will I buy windows XP is the opposite of Will the final version of Windows XP require activation like the beta does?
If the final WinXP requires activation I'm going to buy Win2k on monday. If it doesn't, then I'll wait and probably buy WinXP.

/me is gagging on his swollen bloated OS...

Damn...I'm using the Whistler Beta build 2428...

there is no way I'd pay for this thing....

I turned off system restore, remote access and all that other crap I can find, I set my theme to Windows Classic...and I'm stil using 15MB more RAM than Win2k...and for what purpose?

I hate Windows Media Plyaer 7, I'm sure 8 is as bad or worse....

15MB of RAM may not be much...but why waste it?

I am not going to pay for this crap. Win2000 Pro it is for me.

Yep, you said it right Noriaki, 15MB gone, and you know for what... a skin system designed by Microsoft(ie: WMP7), and other behind your back programs.

Just another flaw in the XP OS.

I'm a little confused here.......
If MS successfully implements its XP scheme, won't its other products
follow suit??? Meaning new copies of 2K will also have this "copy
protection"???
I think the only way to stop this is NOT buy it or any other product
that has this copy protection. I just hope businesses stay away from
it. Otherwise we're going to have big brother (MS) watching our
every move.....

Noriaki: You're usin beta software. What did you expect? Every single piece of the OS is a debug build nor a release. Of course its going to use more ram and of course it will be slower.

Hmm that's true...I sort of forgot about debug modes...

GregMal: Well Microsoft said that they would be using it on the latest release of Office, Office 10, however, I doubt we'll see activation codes be implemented into previous OSes, simply because the OS would have to be recoded, and personally, I think that it just won't happen, hopefully.

My 2 cents are:

If Microsuck can make Winblows XP (XP stands for X-tra poopy) stable *AND* fast with the popular games that are out (I know... this is also a function of video card manufacturers' drivers), then I'll give it a shot!! Why not??

Win 98 works ok for me know... the only problem I have are after using it for a long time, the buildup causes windows not to shut down properly very often. And it is bogged down by useless crap in the systray that I'm too lazy to get rid of... but other than that, it's ok.

If the gay sh1t is disabled by default (e.g., it'll be Win2k looks with 2k and 98SE comptibility :)), I will consider checking it out. But I will have to find a cr4ck for the reg scheme, because that's just plain ghey.

The windows can all be turned back to classic with a check box. I myself like the new look. It is refreshing to look at something new after having the same basic look for 3 OS. So many people will bash something new just because they are afraid they might have to learn something different. It is hard not to like features like built in cdr cdr-w support. Just drag files to the cdr drive and click write when you want to burn it. No need to open another program. How about the built in firewall? You will have to try it yourself to make up your mind to trash it. As far as me buying it? Depends on what they end up using for the reg process. I will not buy it if I have to call them with every hardware change, I would be on the phone way too much.

Assuming that MS will incorporate some copy-protection scheme that forces the user to register and it cannot be cracked, then you will see a flood of people not buy it, stick with the old OS (why get rid of something that works on your old comp), and using Linux solutions.
