Windows XP cannot be activated today.

Billing rate is $75/hr.

Four hours to install apps on another machine and recover from backups, not to mention time wasted on phone trying to reach Microsoft = $300.

So not only do I lose $300 in income, I end up doing four hours of work that I am not being paid for, all thanks to Microsoft...

Thanks again.

Good advice.

Meanwhile, the reason you can't access the Borg's M$) site is probably because there was a worldwide DOS a worm (W32.SQLExp.Worm) similar to Code Red, last night, and the system is still shaking it out. Here's info from Symantec. It attacks Win 2K Server (and presumably similarly configured XP machines) on UDP Port 1434. I'm running Win 98 SE, but my Zone Alarm log shows a lot of probes on that port, today.

I just checked my router security settings and UDP 1434 is getting hammered. I don't thnk this is over yet. I have a list of the IP's that sent it, but notifying them is probably useless.

If this was tracked to the source and they could prosecute, nothing short of pulling 1 in patches of skin off slowly would satisfy my thirst for revenge.😛

Read the license agreement and the indemnification clause. (You did indicate your agreement to that when you pressed F8 during installation.)

Uhhh, that's moronic. Did you actually have something billable you could've done instead of upgrading your machine? If so, why on earth would you try to upgrade (note my earlier respone)?

Their activation line is open 24/7. Unfortunately, they are being ate up by the SQL worm out there and their servers are down.
I know that. Just commenting on Ameesh asking us to accomidate MS hours for a product we paid MS for.
Well, if you buy something from a local store, and it doesn't work, you can't return it at midnight; you'd have to wait until the next day to return it. However, this is a bit ridiculous - Microsoft has billions of US$ in profits, and they can't afford to keep their own servers patched? WTF is up with that.

Oh and don't bother with the pointless ramblings of Ameesh. Almost everybody knows that he is in love with Microsoft; those of us who use some Microsoft products because we have to (and acknowledge the pros of said products where they exist) can just realize that the Linux / *BSD FUD that he spreads is primarily false, and that most of the propaganda for Microsoft products that he spouts is not true, also.

i never bother reading it.Half the stuff in their is not legally binding even do they try to make u think its. If i was him i would sue and see what happens.Worse will happen u will lose and lose $25 for filling a lawsuite.

In case you didn't know: He works for Microsoft, so is not totally impartial.

Have had that too with a machine, in the end I just used an illegal key instead. If you klicked on the link Microsoft provided as 'help', you got a page where you could buy more licenses. Screw that, if the license that came with the PC doesn't work anymore if you reinstall.

You didn't lose 300 you lost 4 hours.

If you have to do it again you can still only bill 300 for the original 4 hours.

You only lose money if you are turning away clients you may lose some time but that is not nearly as much.

I bill 90 and when I am doing PREVENTATIVE it is closer to 200. I could claim that every time I am stuck in traffic I for an hour I lost 100 buck BUT the fact is I only lost an hour. Because Had I not been stuck in traffic then I whould still not have been billing.

why cant you just wait until monday to activate them it take slike 20 seconds to do. and how does that cost you couple hundred dollars?

Why don't you just ask Ameesh to run to the next tower over. He does work for Microsoft.

Oh yeah, you don't even have to activate it for up to 15 days. You can use it until Monday no hassles no restrictions.

If the machine runs his website then he did lose a lot.

Hmm.. trusting a "mission critical" machine to an OS that requires outside activation at unpredictable intervals when doing maintenance and upgrades; there's a good idea. Given that MSFT is intent upon this product activation business model, my suggestion would be to vote with your consumer dollars and go elsewhere; find a vendor who fits your needs, rather than one that forces you to fit theirs.

If I remember correctly, MS promised that customers will be able to activate their Xp's any time they wish. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. I guess they were full of sh!t.

Well...barring widespread DoS attacks that blocks access, I'm sure.

1. The attacks only lasted a few hours, so they shouldn't be telling him to come back on Monday again.

2. The attacks flooded servers, but unless Microsoft was indeed so stupid as not to patch any of their own servers, they should not have gone down. Especially on an internal network, where they can just block it at the firewall already (unless that runs Microsoft software too of course).

Sure MS should know that there are DoS-attacks in the Internet? Either:

1. They were unaware of DoS and DDoS-attacks, in which case their expertise should be questioned
2. They did know about them, and they still proceeded to make claims that they are unable to fulfill. In which case their honesty should be questioned.

Well...they could have had them patched to the nines and it would not have mattered if the main root nameservers were knocked out.

Granted, the front line support reached is not much better than a bunch of monkeys...
