Just did a repair/upgrade to Windows XP and computer is now requiring me to activate the software before I can use it. Called Microsoft this morning to activate it and they told me their servers are all down and to try back in 4 - 5 hours. I have called back repeatedly but now just get voicemail message that tells me Microsoft is open Monday - Friday.

I believe Microsoft's product activation has just cost me a couple of hundred dollars in lost business...

This is really pissing me off...

Pardon if I'm wrong, but is there not a 30-day grace period after installing or repairing...

I've never had to wait to activate my legit XP Pro... I install, reboot, and voila, I surfin AT..

corp iso + keygen = no activation.

Cry foul, but if you really paid for it, who cares?

It's no different than having MP3's of CD's you bought on your hard disk...

Of course, they will tell you differently.

Cheers!

Good advice.

Meanwhile, the reason you can't access the Borg's M$) site is probably because there was a worldwide DOS a worm (W32.SQLExp.Worm) similar to Code Red, last night, and the system is still shaking it out. Here's info from Symantec. It attacks Win 2K Server (and presumably similarly configured XP machines) on UDP Port 1434. I'm running Win 98 SE, but my Zone Alarm log shows a lot of probes on that port, today.

Why can't MS be open 24/7 for the customers who need them? Why must we be at the beck and call of MS?

Their activation line is open 24/7. Unfortunately, they are being ate up by the SQL worm out there and their servers are down.

Maybe they should switch to Apache. :D

No offense, but if your machine is so critical to your business, why is it your only machine? A single point of failure is never a good thing, XP or otherwise.

Why would they be eaten up by the worm? Should they be patched considering the patch has been out for a year.

How come their site goes down, while others are merely badly reachable? Unless they don't patch their own servers of course...

Based on the number of attempts on 1434/UDP my firewall logged from lawsqlsvr2.hotmail.com I'd say that they don't patch all their servers.
