Just did a repair/upgrade to Windows XP and computer is now requiring me to activate the software before I can use it. Called Microsoft this morning to activate it and they told me their servers are all down and to try back in 4 - 5 hours. I have called back repeatedly but now just get voicemail message that tells me Microsoft is open Monday - Friday.
I believe Microsoft's product activation has just cost me a couple of hundred dollars in lost business...
This is really pissing me off...
uhh, yeah right. I won't re-quote the proper business billing practices vs amount you're claiming you've lost - that's already been done in previous posts. And they're right. You didn't lose anywhere near the amount you're upset about - that is if you were indeed billable.
* What the hell were you doing a "
repair/upgrade" during "billable hours" in the first place!?
** If you can lose that kind of money by one computer being down -
why don't you have more than one computer? Are you going to bitch and moan to Enermax for costing you down time if your out of warranty power supply takes a vacation?
*** Unless your copy of XP is warez, then
you DID get a product grace period - you were just too hasty in "getting billable" to notice and you clicked right passed it. Not even worth whining about - a legit copy isn't going to glitch out like that.
**** Saying that MS HQ is inept because they were susceptible to the DDOS attack is ignorant - those of you who say that do not understand the nature of how yesterday's DDOS can render resources unavailable w/out directly manipulating the end resource. I run Novell & MS servers w/SQL in my Soho and have resources exposed to the internet. My web servers were unaffected but a resource that my ISP is connected to had a rough time of it - making internet access to my servers a bit spotty. MS
could have had in house resources compromised, but at the timing of your post - there was no evidence that would support that idea. Nonetheless,
the're not accountable to you for the results of the DDOS.
***** Furthering previous mention: I suppose you'd
Cowby up if MS held you responsible if your computer were infected and you unknowingly assisted in the DDOS attack that rendered their services unavailable?
I have my own reasons for liking/disliking Microsoft - but I'm responsible with them. Regardless of whether you
like MS, you chose to use their product. There are instructions. There are HUNDREDS of posts of people upset about product activation (both good and bad) so it's not like you are somehow immune to the fact that you
could have an issue there.
1. One hour installing XP and finding out you have to wait a few hours for activation = frustrating.
2. Four hours to install apps on another machine and losing maximum billable hours = $300.00
3. Operating a business without implementing a responsible method of operation (and blaming someone else) = Priceless... 😀
That said, Dude, we all stick our heads up our asses once in a while. The key is whether or not you learn from it and avoid the same pitfall the next time around the block. I think you probably learned something there eh!?
