Windows XP Booting Problem

Windows XP booting problem

I am using Windows XP Pro (Athlon XP 2200+, 512MB Ram, Arcade GF2, MX400, ECS K7S5A Pro, Maxtor 7200RPM/8MB/ATA) and recently I have problem starting my windows:
1. It?s freeze when it starts opening the windows,
2. It?s freeze when I am in the safe mode
3. Also have problem rebooting to safe mode
4. Sometimes when I tried to reboot, it seems that both the CD writer and the DVD Rom are running (as the light keeps blinking) but there?s nothing showing on the screen and can?t boot it up. I cannot restart it by ctrl+alt+delete or not even by pressing the restart button but by shutting the power off.
5. I have taken the hard drive out and placed it on other PC, have a thorough check on the hard drive and it is not damaged. Have also checked for the virus, spy bolt and ad-ware and it is cleaned.

Could anyone please help me with this? Thanks a million!!!

Why not try taking all the extra cards off, leave just the video card, and try booting to see if any of the card is the problem. Insert them back one at a time to test them out. Also download memtest86 to test your memory.

I tried to reboot again and it only shows the video card and stuck in there. Can't even go to BIOS. I wasn't be able to check the memory as suggested. Please help.

If you can't boot into the bios, then there is probably something wrong with your motherboard. Check to make sure you cpu is seated properly to include the heatsink/fan. Does the cpu fan spin up when you boot? Like I said though, I think your motherboard is not working right.
One other suggestion is to clear your CMOS. I am not sure if there is a a jumper for that on your motherboard or not. If there is a jumper (check your manual), set the jumper and then turn on the computer to clear the cmos. If there is no jumper, you can take the batter out and let it sit for a few hours to a day. Or for a quicker way, take out the battery, and then take out the memory and all the cards, use a screw driver with plastic handle ( so you won't get shock), to touch the bottom metal and the lever that holds the battery in (basically connecting the positive and negative ends), turn on the computer and then turn it back off quickly. That is how you clear the cmos. Now plug the battery and the cards back in and boot up. See if you can get back into the bios to redo your settings. Note that this technique is only if you want a quick reset and you don't have a jumper to clear the CMOS.

You said that you couldn't get into the bios. Can you see the boot up screen with the bios version and such when it boots?

I have checked the CPU and the heat sink and both are properly seated. The CPU fan spins up when I boot.

I have tried to clear CMOS Jumper as suggested. There is this specific jumper on the motherboard.

When I restarted the computer, it did go to the BIOS setup page, unfortunately, I can?t make the selection. I am not sure if it?s freeze or it?s because of the keyboard. I am using a wireless keyboard and mouse. So, I removed the existing wireless keyboard and mouse and changed back to the basic. I restarted it again and this time, it stuck in this screen:

AMD Athlon ? XP 1500+
American Megatrends AMIBIOS © 2001
Checking NVRAM

However, I am not sure if the keyboard and mouse are detected. I thought it?s plug and play?

Restarted again and this time it can go through everything (checking the memory, detecting the hard drive) but it stuck at the BIOS. Can?t move the arrow up or down in the selection. I wonder if the keyboard is connected?

Restarted again and it can?t even boot up. Only the light of the CD writer and DVD Rom keep blinking.

I tried the clear CMOS Jumper again and this time, it didn?t go to BIOS setting but only in this screen:

NVIDIA Geforce 2 MX-400 VGA BIOS
Version 3.11.01.48.87
Copyright © 1996-2001 NVIDIA Corp.
64.0MB RAM

It seems that my keyboard and mouse are not connected as I can?t move the arrow (navigation keys). I am not sure if it?s just freeze there or it?s the keyboard that are not connected?

I just noticed that when I turn on the main power, the flash of green light on the keyboard. Does that mean there should be connected?

Is there any way that I can get into the BIOS and check on it?

remove the mobo from the case man put it on a box or something run it wit only a floppy memory processor and video card psu dont forget that 🙂
maby you got a problem with the grounding on the case in one case av seen it was the monitor man
good luck

The green light on the keyboard indicates that your keyboard is connected. Do as what Alexsandar suggested. If that doesn't work, I think maybe your motherboard has finally failed. YOu might want to replace it. Unless someone else has any idea.

Aleksandar, I am not sure how to work on this. Just remove the motherboard from the case and try to reboot it? Should I just leave the video card with the motherboard? how about the hard drive? I am sorry that I am asking such a silly question as I am really green on this.

Is there other easier way to check if the motherboard is failed or not?

Thank you.
