What I meant was... why are they even showing us this (and have the cheek of giving some recommend requirements at the bottom of the page, with no mention of HDCP)?

Surely some people will discover these clips and say "wow this is great, I'm going to upgrade my pc to fit those requirements", and then they'll be enjoying the Batman Begins trailer in 1080p on their 2405FPW, for example, and then when the actual HD movies become available, they'll find they need HDCP, and have wasted lots of money?
So..... anyone want to answer my questions?

Sorry, missed this. I would say that this is a question best asked of MS. I have no idea why MS was still selling Win ME after XP came out. ME was such a disaster, but they just kept on flogging it. Perhaps there is no real reasoning behind this, perhaps it is simply they're best efforts at making more money.

As usual in this debate on all forums I've seen, M$ is taking the heat, when they do not in any way deserve it...

Busithoth said: "The act of desampling video on the fly would be such a performance hit that the crack to fix it would be posted on CNET.com, for crying out loud. "

Considering that H.264 seems to require dedicated hardware for decoding any way, this wont be a problem if such hardware would be able to do this (don't know if G70 / R520 will be able to, but if they are, then this is not a problem). I am guessing people without such hardware are screwed anyway (cant decode the movie on the fly), so...

Yeah, that's what's going to happen. It already starting in the big screen TV market.

Where of course, you'll face the limitations, and that's if you're lucky. If you're not, you'll just get a blank screen.

So just to clarify then....going back to the Batman Begins HD trailer... after downloading from Microsoft, I'm watching it fine on XP without HDCP, but once a Batman Begins HD-DVD comes out, will I not be able to play it on XP? Or is it just Longhorn that has the protection issues?

If Warner Bros chooses to protect their movie, then if any component in your system doesn't support the protection standard then you won't get the full resolution media. So if you can't play it in Vista, then you're definitely not going to be able to play it on XP or Linux.

To Sumerize for Papa Lazarou:

Windows Vista(Longhorn) will include DRM software that will allow "Content" provides to downsample Video output down to 480i or completely block any video output unless the end destination has a form of HDCP enabled. However, this is -not- madatory in Windows Vista and is completely up to the original maker.

Windows has to do this because Blu-Ray and HD-DVD call for this type of copywright protection schemes in thier standards. Thus any players which do not support the HDCP check should not play Blu-ray or HD-DVD disks. This includes XP, Linux, OSX, etc etc etc etc.

You specifically mention the HD-DVD. You will not be able to play that HD-DVD without
1.) Having a HD-DVD Player
2.) Having a HDCP monitor (HDCP-DVI or HDCP-HDMI)
Regardless of Brand, Make, Model, Software, etc (baring any cracking)

However, nothing says you can't obtain a 1080p version of Batman Begins from some other source and play it on XP etc, but most likely it will be illegal.

Again, I stress, Windows Vista leaves this up to the content provider.

I don't like this... I hope it's a feature that doesn't make it into the final product.

The Monitor thing is absurd, but what's even worse perhaps is this requirement for 256megs of video ram minimum just to run Longhorn correctly... I wonder if that is really what it will need... i mean, can 256-512 even fit on these onboard graphics that are so popular with mainstream users?

ummm, wait until longhorn, uh i mean "vista", is out then say that, by the time it's out, most mainstream cards would have at least 256mb since M$ is pushing the hardware.

Perhaps so...well at least that might speed things along and open up for even better games, as ATI/Nvidia will have to sell those 256 cards real cheap

Actually Vista/Longhorn doesn't require it... Aero Glass, the "pretty" GUI, requires it.

Let me tell you what, "premium content" won't be bought or used on my machine. Their attempts to sell me crap on my computer will fail.

Having such a high video ram requirement is suicide in the Corporate market. I know my boss would seriously question why exactly the gal in accounting who does nothing but spreadsheet/word processor stuff needs an X800 in her system.

I suspect there may be some miscommunication on these requirements. I find it far more likely that the 256mb video ram requirement is for Vista with all the flashy stuff. Disable themes and the new transparency stuff and it'll run on significantly less ram... when the final version is released. At least, that's my theory.

I bet that once vista/longhorn is released m$ will soon not give support to XP users. This has already happend with ME. When I had some trouble with ME, tech support said they don't support ME. Boy i sure cant wait for this to happen to XP. F-off M$.
