Windows update - Windows 10 Failed to install

I have 3 attempts to install Windows 10 from the free update on my Windows 8.1 machine , but all 3 times it fails with a Code 80246010

Any suggestions how to fix this?
 
DL the media using the Microsoft media tool and create a dvd from it. I upgraded a win 7 pc using a dvd and let the 8.1 use what it got from ms to upgrade. Both worked fine, however they cannot contact the activation servers to validate themselves.
 
I had a computer upgrade perfectly fine when it did the in-place upgrade. However I decided to do a clean install using the reset option. Now I'm getting a crash with "Inaccessible boot device" in an endless loop.

So yeah - there are some rough edges with the installation. I'm going to try again installing from an ISO with a USB stick.

My computer running the Insider Preview upgraded just fine. Out of the 3 machines I tried to update, I'm having issues with 2 of them.

In your case, try deleting the "$Windows.~BT" folder so it can re-download the install files.
 
I had the same problem. Error code 80240020. I'm downloading again via the update tool and will try another PC that preloaded itself yesterday.

Nope. All three of my PCs gave that error when Windows trying to update. Laptop and two desktops.

I had to use the media tool to upgrade each machine. The laptop worked okay, but both desktops are having issues. My main rig is stuck with the circle glowing up and down at 0% progress with "copying files' at 2%. How do you fail at that? The other desktop became stuck in a reboot loop. 🙄

Even the laptop hasn't been headache free. One account has issues once logged in with the UI ceasing to respond for long periods of time while the other account does not. Microsoft fails three for three in our house.

The reboot loop could be due to that intel microcode maybe?

Hmm, unless the problem extends to Core 2 Q6600s, probably not the same issue.

Le sigh. I'm going to cancel the upgrade on my main rig again by rebooting it a few times. It eventually gets the idea and reverts back to Win 7. It's been sitting at "copying files 2%" for a couple hours and I'm ready to let it give up.

It's really irritating. This should not be that hard. Even more irritating that I have to upgrade at all to get the free license when they can't get it right.
 
I just rolled by desktop back to 8.1 because it completely butchered my software, drivers and pretty much everything about my pc. My laptop upgraded just fine but my tablet has lost the use of its touchpad and I will probably roll it back as well. When I tried to do a clean install of 10 it wanted a key which is something that Microsoft said it wouldn't require to do a clean install after you did an upgrade in place and activated it.
 
I had the auto update fail a couple times now.

If I download the ISO from MSDN, can I still upgrade in place and keep my license code?

Did you link the upgrade to an online account and made sure it really was activated?

Yeah, go into "Settings" and "About" I believe. I activated my laptop copy at least and I think I'm going to wipe it soon.

I might try again fresh tonight with the desktops. I already restored the disc image to stop the one desktop from rebooting and my main rig restored back to 7 successfully after the update process hanged.
 
I had the same error 4 times while trying to upgrade and finally just bit the bullet and went with the clean install from MSDN downloaded iso on a new SSD that I was just trying to put off for a couple of weeks. That went without a hitch.

Just curious, how did you activate the clean install without upgrading over an existing install? I've seen others say it asks for a key.

Same thing happened to me on my main workstation... sitting at "copying files 2%" for three hours... Tried it 4 times and gave up...

Upgrade went fine on my laptop (took about 45 minutes).

Sweet. At least I'm not the only one seeing it. If you get it working, let me know. I'm going to try again tonight after I knock out some school work after work.

Yes I did and I've been building my own systems and installing my own software since the early 90's so this upgrade was the absolute worst I've ever encountered on my desktop. I just finished rolling back my tablet to 8.1 and now my laptop is my only pc with a fully functional 10 pro 64 bit installed. When I lost office on my desktop that said it all for me and I still plan to clean install 8.1 pro x64 on it at the end of this semester on a Samsung 850 pro unless conditions force me to do so sooner.
