It is confusing to me. Can current Windows Phone 8 be upgraded to Windows Phone 9, or not? (Carriers notwithstanding)

Who knows? There's nothing wrong with current Win8 phone hardware though so I'd guess that they can.

It was confirmed by Microsoft that they can be. Just remember, the UI and OS are pretty simple in terms of needing resources. The problem with older hardware will be new applications and IE (html 5 sites). The phones themselves should last a long time.

To me this just sounds like something thats fun to complain about but really doesnt make a difference. I have wp7 running 7.5 and it still does everything I need it too. No need to update it if everything is working the way it should be. Im sure w8 has more bells and whistles but just cause win8 came out doesnt mean my 7 is broken. And i can totally understand a new os wanting better hardware to work with.

Did anyone else actually look at the eol dates on these. They are counting 7.X revisions for 18 months. So if you bought a wp7 phone your 18 months refreshed with 7.1, 7.5 and now 7.8. 7.0 is already eol and 7.8 is going eol later than 8.0.

As long as Ms precedent doesn't change when 8.whatever releases (likely blue as 8.5 or something) if you install the update your 18 months restarts.

At least that's how I took it after seeing 7.8s lifespan as longer than 8.0

This isn't surprising at all. Microsoft has always approached product support in a similar manner. They treat service packs like the different releases of Windows Phone.

7 support is over. 7.5 support will end soon. 7.8 support is going to be ongoing for a while. That's completely reasonable.
