From what I understand, they are saying that the OS - Windows Phone 8 - will stop receiving updates after 18 months. If you're phone is on WP8 but then updates to WP9 or Blue or whatever it's called, then you'll continue to receive updates since you're on the new OS.

I recently got my first ever smart phone a Nokia Lumia 822 and I hate it. I'm returning it and getting a S4 I think.

The apps just crash way too often on WP8 :(

I heard Lumia phones have the highest return rate of any Nokia phones ever.

That's how I understood it as well.

I can see that people don't trust Microsoft after the WP7 to 8 upgrade that didn't happen but I think that they are doing right here (assuming that WP8 devices get upgraded to the newest os).

It's like WinXP losing support but getting a free upgrade to Win7 (sort of, at least I avoided a car analogy :p).

Why do you hate it? I haven't had any crashes on my applications on my htc 8x *shrug*.

It's not much different from Google Android. 18 months is unofficial policy for Google too.

To be fair, WP7 was really just a transitional thing anyway. WP8 is where you want to be.
Of course, if they think I'm buying new hardware every 18 months just cuz THEY want me to, they are quite insane.

It would have been nice of them to notify potential customers back when they launched WP7. ;)

You're missing the point of the article. It's about OS updates. You don't necessarily have to buy new hardware to upgrade to the newest OS. However, OS upgradability (whether or not certain handsets get updated to the latest OS) depends on OEM and carriers, not Microsoft. It's just like Android.

Anecdotally, I am seeing more WP's out there. Been itching to try one, though there certainly will be a few apps I miss moving from Android...

I love how incendiary the tech sites are trying to be with this story, when it's really not a big deal.

It is confusing to me. Can current Windows Phone 8 be upgraded to Windows Phone 9, or not? (Carriers notwithstanding)

I suppose that depends on when Windows Phone 9 comes out. The next update that's rumored is "Windows Blue", and they'll all at least be well in the window for that one.

He has a....ah...reputation for being vehemently anti-Redmond. It's best to just ignore it.

While I agree with most of his posts on other subjects, I am relieved to know I'm not the only one who sees that.
